Hello,
I have ran varsity track and cross country for three years. On my pre-candidate questionnaire, I listed that I have received varsity letters. When I asked my coach about the "letters" he had no idea what I was talking about. Do I have my "letters." Also I go to a relatively small school where competition isn't hard get on varsity.

Thanks
AM

Is there a distinction on the team between Varsity and JV athletes? What's the criteria for being considered "Varsity" vs JV (ie show up to all the meets & practices, get specific times, participate on the team "x" number of years)? It seems different sports even within the same school have different criteria. At the end of the season, most athletes know whether they are Varsity or JV, and often are given an actual Varsity letter (that can be sewn onto a jacket) and/or a certificate from the school stating they are Varsity. It seems odd that your coach doesn't know what a Varsity letter is.

And if there is no distinction between Varsity and JV on your team, I would note that on your application.

We get "pins" our senior year. There is a distinction between both.

If you get a "pin" in lieu of a "letter" and your coach considers you "Varsity", then for the sake of the application I would say yes, you have your Varsity letter.

A smaller school may do it differently from a school with 500 in each class.

Generally, "lettering" refers not only to participating in a varsity sport, but meeting certain criteria within the sport (attendance at practices, etc.), and maintaining academic and school citizenship standards as well. The exact requirements may not be the same at every school. In other words, not everyone who is on a varsity team receives a varsity letter, or in your case, a pin. Best to check with your administration. Good Luck!

Everyone is stating what is a varsity letter. The only think that matters it what your school says. At our last school if you ran in one varsity race you were varsity as long as you practiced everyday and have your all. So all these stipulation people are saying do not matter. Ask your coach.

Our current school gives a varsity letter for the academic team. The Tavel and go to meets!! This is all school determined
