I am starting this thread for cadets/parents who will join ROTC at Virginia Tech this fall - Class of 2015. Please state which ROTC program and any other info you care to share. My goal is that this will become a useful place for our Q&A's as we begin this journey.

DS will join VT Corp of Cadets and AFROTC. He has been accepted into the School of Engineering and plans to major in Aerospace Engineering. We are from Virginia and have attended many VT Football games over the years, as well has having spent a lot of time on the VT campus. We are looking forward to cheering for the Hokies this year!

Make sure you pm Nick4060. He will be an invaluable source for the cadets.

Also I know that VT does a cadet weekend, maybe you should all pm each other regarding that issue.

Off topic, or DD is at VT, not ROTC, but I have to say they are rabid when it comes to Hokie Pride. I don't believe there bis a school in this country that has more school spirit. OBT eldest is also in ACC.

Perhaps one that has as much is Texas A&M... home of the 12th man. All the students stand throughout the football games. http://aggietraditions.tamu.edu/team/12thman.html

    Virginia Tech

DS has been accepted to VT Corp of Cadets - General Engineering and wants to pursue Mechanical Engineering.

We visited a few weeks ago and DS loved it! Beautiful school...we just have to see how the $$$ works out - out of state hurts.

    Thanks for starting this thread!

Has anyone received the ELS for the Corp?

Hi ebfarrar.....you may want to ask for assistance under the regular ROTC thread. Since we are new to this (not even in the program until fall) I have no idea as to who you might speak with. However, have you tried phoning VT and speaking w/ someone in the Corp of Cadets or the ROTC Recruiting office? They are VERY accessible and and if they can assist you in any way, they will. I have found them to be VERY helpful and if they don't answer the phone, I have received a call back w/in the hour each time I have left a message. Good luck and I hope the Xfer works out for your son!:thumb:

Will you or your DD/DS be attending?

Also, the buildings are made of dolomite limestone and it is called Hokie Stone. It is quarried at a 40-acre university-owned quarry and the composition is unique to Va Tech. Just a little "fun fact"!

    Funny Family

Not attending but we visit college campuses for fun and it gives our kids the chance to see the various settings. Nothing like comparing a dorm that houses 6,000 to a small house for your living experience. Still remember the first time they saw a Big 10 dorm that took up 4 city blocks.

Other fun fact the maroon is actually called Chicago red, I don't know why Chicago and not VA, just know that is the colors name.

    VT has cadet dorms.

VAMOM -- you could be talking about my son. He will be joining the VT Corp of Cadets, AFROTC, and will be in the School of Engineering and plans on majoring in Aerospace Engineering. We are from FL, he will be a very long way from home, and only 17 for the first 4 months.

Hi ProudMom! Well, you may have just met his new "VIRGINIA MOM"! Our daughter is a sophomore at William and Mary and she was 17 for 3 months of her freshman year as well so I know how you feel! We live in the Richmond area so let's connect our boys so your son has a place to come during short holiday weekends etc. if he won't be going home. We are used to having a housefull of kids and I will miss it!

We are three 1/2 hours from VT door to door (don't think I have not timed this! LOL). My best gal pal went to University of VA and her husband went to VT so we have attended a ton of VT events w/ them (nice rivalry there!). My husband and I have numerous friends who have graduated from VT! n We love it and my breath has always been taken away when the Corp marches in at the games. It's spectacular.

Someone posted a while back on another thred to be sure and make reservations for parents weekend now (It's in November)....there are not that many hotels in the area and they fill up FAST. We like to stay at the Inn at Virginia Tech. It's on campus and VERY convenient but a bit pricey. There is also the Hotel Roanoke (which is VERY nice and owned by VT....it's about 20 minutes from campus so not as convenient). Then you have your basic chains that are a bit more reasonable.

We are new to ROTC and the Corp but are very familiar with Blacksburg and teh VT area. I am happy to answer any questions in that arena as well. Let me know if we can help you out in any way! And congrats on VT ENG! Not an easy major to be accepted into at Tech!

Hi WardNC....yes, out of state H$$$urts, I know! I wanted to answer your question...our son did receive one of the ELS's. That was nice! Can you say "laptop"? And I just figured taht you are from NC! :) Neighbors. We go to the OBX whenever we can get there. Going in two weeks for spring break, as a matter of fact! :)

I hope your son gets to attend VT if that is what he wants. Our poor Class of 2015 kids are hitting college at a bad economic time.:frown:

    VT Parents Weekend

This year VT's family weekend is the weekend of October 15th - make your hotel reservations now as they really fill up fast. If you can get down to VT that weekend it's a good break for your cadet. They don't get a lot of time away from the dorms.

    Other key dates:
New Cadet Reception Day - Saturday Aug. 13
New Cadet Parade - Saturday Aug. 20
Hotel rooms for R day aren't as hard to come by because the cadets arrive a week earlier than most students. Definitely book ahead for the weekend of the New Cadet Parade because Blacksburg is swamped with returning students

JIC you are from the No VA area there is a bus that leaves VT on Fridays and takes the kids to the Vienna Metro area. I think it is 30 bucks. It does sell out quickly.

Back on topic...cadets at VT must do push ups for every touch down with a cheerleader on their back...so make sure you are physically prepared. I believe they rotate each branch, and of course the cadets too.

I know from our DD who has a friend in NROTC and the Corps, they do a 20 something mile hike in the fall...just can't remember if it is NROTC or the CoC that requires it.

Do you mean the Caldwell March? If so, that's a CoC requirement. All freshmen go on a 13 mile hike in early October - the first half of the Caldwell March - which marks the end of the first phase of New Cadet training. They do the second half of the Caldwell March (another 13 mile hike) in the spring which marks the end of their freshman cadet training. The Class of 2014 will be doing the Caldwell March this weekend.

I guess that is what they were talking about. I just remember she stated it was an all day affair.

FWIW, VT is one of 7 schools that have a Corps of Cadets. You actually don't have to do ROTC to be in CoC, but I believe if you are in ROTC you are in the CoC. Maybe wrong, that is just my memory.

VT IMPO is probably the most beautiful campus I have ever seen. It is now known as Hogworts because the Harry Potter movies could have been filmed there....seriously.
