I'm not sure where I should post this, but I'm am attending the cadet for a day programs at USCGA and USMMA in the same week. I am looking for tips about where to fly into and where to stay. If anyone has done this before and has knowledge that would be greatly appreciated.

It's about a 3 hour drive between the academies, you have a lot of leeway in choosing where to stay.

Central CT is an obvious choice, Bridgeport/Milford/Trumball seems to be a halfway point.

Downhiller 2010 -Do you have a visit scheduled at USMA? I was told they won't have dates available to schedule a visit til Sept. My son is attending the Cadet for a Day at the Cost Guard Academy in Oct and we were trying to do the same as you.

I think you may be misunderstanding me. I was talking about the united States Merchant Marine Academy, not the United States Military Academy.

I don't know where you're coming in from, but flying into Boston Logan, then taking Amtrak NE Regional from Boston to New London has always worked well for me. The flights are way cheaper flying into Boston from the West Coast. Plan in some extra time (a few hours) just in case Amtrak is running late. It costs about $20 for Amtrak, $1.70 for the T (Silver Line) from Logan to South Station, and $6ish for a taxi from the train station to the Academy.

We flew into Islip New York. Southwest flies in there and usually has cheap fares. Visited USMMA one day. Then drove out to eastern Long Island and took the Orient Point ferry to USCGA. The ferry pulls in about 1 mile from the Academy. And like you, we ate dinner in Mystic afterwards.

The best place to fly into on Southwest is Providence (PVD). It's a direct shot off of I-95, easy, fairly small airport, and in general the one that cadets used while I was there. Some people went to Hartford; I did a few times, but it's much less direct and not as easy to get around in.

Its going to be a really tough choice....USMMA admissions has told me I am going to be one of the first applications reviewed due to my test scores, but I'm guessing its going to take awhile to hear from CGA. Im confident it will work out in the end! :thumb:

That's how it was for me. USNA and USMMA were fairly quick with the reviews and LOAs....USCGA took its time. I held out, went with CGA despite appearing in my HS yearbook wearing a USNA sweatshirt and I have been very happy with that choice ever since.

You can't go wrong with either school, but you can go "more right" with one of the choices....and I'll let you guess which one I'm talking about....
