I don't see any special requirements noted for engineering students at VMI. However, I'm curious if any current engineering students have specific suggestions or comments to add.

I'm asking because several of the other schools my son considered had different computing requirements for those in engineering programs. For example, VaTech required a tablet due to specific software they used.

Any similar situations at VMI? I'm pretty much assuming he needs to max upgrade whatever laptop we end up getting him in anticipation of any ME specific applications he has to install.

The ME page on their website notes a CADE lab w/ what I hope is out of date spec's on the hardware & software used but nothing about special individual computing requirements.

Hey bro I have a friend who's a senior in the civil engineering department, and he let me know that there's no certain type of computer you need. As long as it's got microsoft word and the basics you'll be alright. So apple, dell, gateway, whatever's good. BUT, a computer with at least 2 gigs of ram (4 gigs is probably the best way to go), 160gb hardrive, and core 2 duo processor would be best. If money's an issue, you can find a computer like this for less than 800 dollars.

They do have laptop info they send out telling us which laptops are acceptable. They have Dell techs on site to fix problems and have a special deal with dell to sell their laptops. I did read that a guy with gateway had troubles because he spent a lot of time with his computer enroute to getting fixed. Dell was fixed with in 30 hrs...Look on their site to see what they require. There is a click thru link to Dell to purchase.
