I know Facebook and other networking sites are allowed at the federal service academies. Is this also the case at VMI? Or, are these sites blocked?

It's allowed except for Rats.

When I visited VMI they said that they were able to go on Facebook, but were not allowed to use the chat.

I'm not a VMI guy but I think RDC stands for Rat Discipline Committee. People that punish you for doing wrong like leaving your rat bible out.

Ok, I confess. What are "big scary RDC reps"?

The RDC is the Rat Disciplinary Committee. If they catch you doing something you're not supposed to i.e talking outside barracks, on facebook chat, skyping, on youtube, improperly dressed, or what have you, then you get sent up to the RDC for a punishment. The punishment varies but its typically a lot of push ups or an intense work out.

You can skype after breakout. Hell you can skype before breakout. My room mate did ALL the time. Just watch out for the big scary RDC reps

:shake: Thank you

I really wouldn't advise doing this...

I think they'll find out if and when they decide to come here. Anything more than what is said during an overnight stay should just be left alone.

Don't think DS is dumb enough to go in with the attitude of "what can I get away with". He is more concerned with "making it". I was just curious if he would be able to skype eventually because that is how we keep in touch with family out of state.

bjkuds: Eventually he'll be able to use all of the social networking tools - sometime after breakout you can do so including Skyping. Having some personal involvement in the RDC (I was on it long ago and my son will be on the RDC for next year's rats- something for your son to look forward to ) Life is difficult enough as a Rat without going out of your way to get a standing invitation to the RDC meetings. You are not supposed to be on social networks as a Rat, nor Netflicks etc... and you are inviting a pile o'grief when you get caught. There is a good reason that the first Semester Rat year is often a stronger semester than the second one- much of it has to do with focusing on the essentials. Most Rats are eager to get out of the room to study (nobody hassles you in your study carrel) and no access to the time wasters on the net. Feb/March comes around and the Cadre and RDC are not prowling the "4th stoop" and suddenly Facebook and Netflix and general horsing around in the rooms become distractors and often grades slump before they rediscover the study techniques they learned the first semester.

His life while studying consists of texting, facebook and skype etc. He can complete HS homework at the same time and get A's. Somehow I think life is about to REALLY change:biggrin: I just hope he is smart enough to see the connection once RDC is done with the prohibition on the "dis-tractors".
Thanks Bruno and Turkish and Long Grey.

I didn't say anything I haven't said to pre-strains. Also I agree its not a good idea, but if you got the gumption, ;)

It's all part of The Game™.

The Game™ being, of course, determining how much you're willing to pay for a given option in each decision you make every day over the course of four years. :thumb:

Newton's Third Law is the primary governing principle of life in the VMI Corps of Cadets.

Got it. Thanks. I am sure that offense ranks right up there among the worse... geez

This thread makes me feel old. Not slide-rule old, but old enough. I'm only 33, but these technological changes amaze me.

We didn't have internet access in the Barracks until Spring Semester of my First Class year ('99), and to make a phone call you had to go to a bank of pay phones in Lejeune Hall or the Concourse (I know LH is demolished now ).

Do they still run stats? With all the phones, email, social networking etc., I wonder if this 19th Century mode of communication is still being practiced at VMI. It was STILL the #1 way in the mid to late 1990s.

Do any of you know what a thing called a "computer lab" is? :shake:

Still sounds like the RDC is full of the personality-deficient. Glad to see some things never change:biggrin:

Say it ain't so, Bruno !! :yllol:

take my "personality-deficient" comment with the sarcasm intended, please.

It's not true- I had a personality when I was on the RDC-It was just a very abrasive one!(I know that there are a couple of Rats from my dykes class who still have nightmares about winning a "Gold Card" to the RDC table and meetings. I believe that RahVaMil met someone from my dykes class who - when she asked about me- asserted that I was kind of a flamer- I was crushed!).
Time has a way of changing things - I'm pretty lovable now:biggrin:
