I second that, SAG. Congratulations to VMI's newest class, the Class of 2014! I haven't yet heard from my son about the Breakout today. I received e-mail from him fairly regularly since he returned from Christmas furlough, but the last I heard from him this week was Wednesday - that's probably when the cadre started turning up the heat to high - and he said something about a 12-mile road march with sandbags and sweat parties along the way. I guess I won't feel too bad when I go out tomorrow morning to shovel more snow from my driveway.

You should all be proud of your sons and daughters in the new class of 2014- great job:thumb:
first youtube is already posted of the Cadets road marching into New Market battlefield to wrap up breakout:

Just a word of warning for the new 4th class- the Ratline is over but the Academic Ratline rolls on. It's fairly typical for a grade slump to set in as the 4th class now are up there on the 4th stoop visiting and BSing in each other's rooms rather than getting out of barracks and studying in their study carels. Stay on top of your game, get out of barracks and make sure that you are as successful in your academics as you have been so far in the Ratline!

    Congratulations class of 2014!

    Class of 2014 Breakout Activities

Finally heard from my son, and here's what our former Rats had to do during yesterday's Breakout:

"We woke up at 0500 to the sound of M14s, Barrett M82s, muskets, and Little John II...and it just went downhill from there. We had two sweat parties back-to-back, went to breakfast, had sandbag workouts, then we went to New Market, marched to the battlefield, had a whole lot of [things] to do there...then came back, had a sweat party on every stoop, and then the last thing we had to do was haul howitzers from behind Crozet Hall to in front of Moody Hall."

Thanks, Bruno, for the good advice on not slacking off. When all the excitement of no longer being a Rat dies down, I plan to whisper your words in my son's ear.

Echoing my congratulations! Struggles and challenges comes in many forms now the rats enter their stage, juggling their freedoms with your responsibilities! Bruno is wise voice of caution - as a veteran parent can say to keep those uplifting messages and some care packages arriving - they are still most appreciated.
Good luck to all - balance your "fun" breaks with your academics next highlight - mid winter formal! larrys mom

Thanks for the video link SAG. A couple of nice touches in there- sweat party with rucksack on- that adds to the joy I'm sure!, and I like ending it with 14 rounds out of the howitzers- pretty classy. Way more civilized than the breakouts of the 1970s (don't ask- they were too revolting for an accurate description on this forum and they have been gone since 1982 I think). Here's a tongue in cheek prediction: the current 2d Class thought that the Rats got over this year and so they will make the Ratline much more "challenging" next year. Next year's 3rd class will be disgusted because the Rats will have a much softer Rat line than they had to endure. I have noticed over the years that the last "real" Ratline was your own and the Corps has just gone to hell since you graduated- (even if that was last May!).
Congratulations to the Class of 2014!

And mind you - those rucksacks were carrying 40 lb. sandbags which were with them throughout the day's activities

    Break out

I have seen my son since break out and as proud of him as I am, he is more proud of himself. The class of 2014 are walking with heads up and a touch of arrogance about them that comes with accomplishing a very very tough task
