I know that the Rats-to-be will issued their boots and low quarters, but I didn't see any mention of them needing a particular kind/color of socks for STP. I know that they will need black dress socks and black boot socks for the fall, but what do the kids typically wear during STP? Thanks.

Socks during STP won't be a bone of contention.
I think that they say shirts with collars and slacks or dress shorts for class and messhall, but basically all they are going to really enforce is decent looking shorts and sleeves on your shirts- decent Tshirts without really obnoxious logos/printing on them) will fly but if you want to be safe- have some polo/golf type shirts and plenty of PT gear. No "slippahs" as they say in Hawaii (shower shoes).

Thanks Bruno! I was kind of wondering what the others tend to wear (sock-wise) so that DS won't stick out like a sore thumb. I guess it's just a mom thing.

Keep in mind that STP really is not a military experience. It's summer school with some mandatory PT sessions but it's not at all adversative. There will be some upper class counselors but beyond that- there will be no upperclassmen around. It really will be a good chance for your son to get a hard class out of the way and learn his way around post, meet his fellow future Rats and enjoy Lexington (which is a better little town than it get's credit for from Cadets!)

You may want to include boot socks.. Black high socks. DS did mention that they were told when to wear them with the issued shoes and boots along with their shorts on occasion and they looked like idiots..but they ALL looked like idiots together..:yllol:

Yeah, that's what I heard! I know he has to have the black boot socks for the fall, but can he wear the boot socks he has now? They're really good quality but not black - we have yet to get those. Do you know if most of the kids wore black dress socks with their low quarters? Thanks!

my information may be dated, since my son attended STP 3 years ago - but when they issued his shoes and boots, he also received a pair of the socks for each to use. Maybe that is really not done - so to be safe yes I would send with him a pair or two of the black dress sock and boot socks. As you know the weights are different and need the correct one. These socks can just be used early for STP since he will need them for august.
My son's summer they did wear those shoes alot - so it really becomes important. larry's mom

I must agree with larry2013.. Come to think off it DS brought home some extra socks they had issued for the boots and low quarters. They provide what they need that isnt on the list for the most part and the book store has extra things that they may need as well. DS needed a cord for his lap top and a thumb drive etc.. all accessible on Post, so dont make yourself nuts worrying over every detail. STP is "relaxed" compared to fall and even if he doesn't have everything perfect there will be someone to help him out or he will manage. Just a little cash or debit card may come in handy for unforeseen items. Quarters for the laundry were important..they will get dirty.

He should be- this is the start of a great adventure. Hard on Mom and Dad to say goodbye, (though it may give you the chance to repaint that Bedroom and throw out a bunch of junk:wink:) but exciting for them and you. Good luck to your son and to all of those parents who soon will be sending off their kids on this new ride "adventures in barracks land"!

DS is excited because he will be home in 1 week.. He has stayed on Post for the 1st summer session and according to him today marks the longest stretch that he has been away from home. He must have been tracking it. It is an amazing place that they will despise at times, yet it some how holds their hearts and their loyalty. He said that he wants to return early for his next semester before the Rats matriculate, that there are benefits of getting guard duty out of the way etc with the early return. It has been an awesome year.. and an extremely fast one. You will be amazed at the changes Goarmymom. You drop off a boy and get back a man.. a very capable one, and the difference in just one years time is amazing. It is a hard year for them and you, but stay the course when it may not seem so appealing. STP is just the beginning and it is so worth it. Your DS will begin to realize that he has made one of the best decisions he could make in going, especially come August.

Thanks for the encouragement! I can't imagine the changes, but I do look forward to seeing them. I'm thinking that one of the great benefits of STP (besides the obvious ones) is that he'll get to run on the hills! We don't have any real hills where we are, so this will help. He's already in really good shape, and this will make things that much better when he matriculates.

DS commented on his first march during STP that it was up hill when they left so he figured it would be easier coming back, but somehow they managed to make it up hill both directions:yllol:

July 2d is just around the corner. Good luck to all of those going to STP- take advantage of the opportunity to focus on what you are there for. Starting off your academic career with an A in a core course, and getting in a lot better physical condition is a pretty good way to start your time at VMI and get you ready to begin your Rat experience in August. :thumb:
