Okay this may be a dumb question, but does anyone know when/how we pay for STP at VMI? Will there be an email sent out, or a bill? Thank you in advance :)

I believe - you will see the charge and pay on line on "Postview" which is where you will do almost all of your transactions. If they haven't yet set you up with an account they will be sending you a userID and Pin soon.

my son attended last year and there was no cost except for what appears to be the tradition of the pre-strains(you) to pay for pizza for the cadets in your room.

STP is the Summer Transition Program. Take 1 class prior to matriculating. And there is Room and Board and tuition etc. I think you are referring to the camps they hold not STP. The costs are listed on the website. Unless you were fortunate enough to get a scholarship for it from the institute,,Thats a great idea! That's the only way it would be free.

I think they will notify us after May 24th deadline(not positive on date). I was told we should receive a bill in the mail in the beginning of June as well as on Post View. There is a balance on DS account for STP and its listed in the weirdest place. Go into the link for Applications on file and click on any of the options listed and it comes up the same. It is not what I expected to find there. But the fees are not accurate yet. They have to determine the number in attendance before billing begins. They don't have a tuition charge on our account yet as well as other fees. I wish that was the final bill but I somehow doubt it:biggrin:

Ironically, that's why I asked. I randomly opened up that tab, and saw the balance. Needless to say, I was very confused. haha I wish that was the actual balance. Coming from out of state, I dont think that I qualified for STP scholarships. Oh well, it is what it is :)

From what I've read OOS students are the primary recipients of the scholarships for STP. YEAH US!! Like you I saw that and am going "I WISH" that were the cost for us. On the application for STP there was a place to say yes or no if you wanted to be considered for scholarships. For as much as we have to come up with I am hoping we get a break on that. It's a lot of money but from what I've learned it can make the difference between surviving Rat Year or washing out all together, so we consider it vital to attend. DS is not a ball of confidence and is looking for every possible way to make it easier to survive. BTW where are you from? Is it you or a DS/DD that's going?

Oh wow, I hadn't seen that. Yeah, from what I have heard it is a great program. I'm looking forward to it! I will be going :) And I'm from Ohio. Where are you from?

Eastern PA. So I guess you and my DS will be Rats together in a few months. He is looking forward to STP as well. He is getting antsy to graduate and get on with college etc, but nervous at the same time. I guess STP is a good place to start building the friendships/relationships you will need to get through it all, plus get your most hated class out of the way. At least that is what DS is planning.

I can definitely relate!! (28 school days left- not that I'm counting :D) STP will be a good way to get either math or science out of the way; and learn a few ropes before matriculation.

OPPs your are right, I am confusing pre-strain with STP. They will let you know when you owe money, VMI is very good at that. Start getting your stuff ready for STP, there is a pretty extensive list to take with you

Gosh I wish I received a ROTC scholarship to VMI because I would be planning to go to STP the same as the both of yall. Needless to say out of state tuition without a scholarship is a small fortune.:(

    VMI - STP

For those of you out of state, on the STP application form there is a place to request scholarship or award IF YOU ARE OUT OF STATE -
We are in state, so can't say for sure, but knowing VMI for the past 2 yrs I WOULD assume they try to make STP as reasonable as possible for all - it is SUCH a help to the RAT to attend STP - just gets 1 class out of way, but also gives you a casual environment to meet some instructors, classmates, learn your way around blah blah -
Please make sure you completely check out the financial side before dismissing going -
    GOOD luck larrys mom

Open House visitors are called Pre-Strains. Freshman cadets in the Ratline will Strain. Straining (called Bracing at The Citadel for the "Knobs") is a rigid form of attention with your chin tucked in nice and tight. At The Citadel, visitors are called Pre-Knobs. VMI decided on Pre-Strain rather than Pre-Rat for some reason.

Technically, they're Prospective Cadets at VMI. But the Corps of Cadets isn't too big on technicalities.

(My hosts called me their Pee Stain.)

My DS from Maryland will be joining you all at STP and the Rat Line in the Fall. He has decided on VMI and just got an Institute Scholar scholarship to help with some of the cost. He is very excited to be going.
