Going to try and walk on at the I. I know that at USNA many wrestlers go SpecWarfare or Marine Ground. Does anybody know if a large percentage of VMI wrestlers, that commission Army, get combat arms?

I'm pretty sure that you can just request for a combat arms MOS. I don't believe that they pull from specific sports but I might be wrong.

I know that you have your branch wishlist at LDAC, I'm just wondering if NCAA athletes get more of a preference.

I can almost guarantee that there is no special preference. It's about how you perform at LDAC. At USNA, those guys just happened to choose those branches. It has nothing to do with sports.

In reality, LDAC performance is only one piece of the puzzle. It's how you perform for your entire time in the program that matters, especially now that the PMS evaluation counts for more than LDAC.

If you do participate in Wrestling you will gain a few extra points in the EC's for your OML evals, not a lot but it all adds up.

As Jcc123 said, Branch selection will depend on you OML standing which is based on quite a few areas of evaluation, Academics being the largest single item on that list.

While attending a SMC can guarantee Active Duty, you will compete with every cadet in the country for your Branch.

Thanks. By the way I'm not participating in wrestling; I am wrestling. Its not the glee club. You don't participate, you wrestle.

You could be playing Basketball.....is that still an inside joke among wrestlers like it was in my day?

    My apologies on "Participating"

Make sure if someone asks if your "Participating" in Wrestling when you arrive at VMI, you don't correct them, they'll have you Participating in all new activities.

DS says it's funny hearing pre-strains (individuals visiting VMI on an overnight) "correct" cadets, professors and staff. Names are remembered .

Yes wrestlers still make fun of basketball, some could call us arrogant. To the rest, no I'm not so socially inept that I'd correct someone of authority at the Institute. When I was at the overnight some JROTC kid tried criticizing his Rat Host on his uniform and such. Needless to say, he had to find somewhere else to sleep.

There are also current cadets/cadre on this forum, as well as active duty officers, retired officers, parents, etc. You should be mindful who you correct everywhere, at least until you have more than half a dozen posts.

Jcc123 I apologize if I offended you, or anyone else. I don't go around like Cliff Clavin constantly correcting others. I was only kidding around and had no intention of being a jerk. As you can see I later admitted that some of us wrestlers can be arrogant, at times.

    It's better...

It's better to have wrestled and lost...than to have played basketball :)

MKHawk - I wasn't offended at all, and actually found the discussion amusing. I just wanted you to be mindful of your audience - a lot of new posters here aren't aware of the backgrounds of many longtime members. As a general rule, here and elsewhere, it's best to lay low until you have a sense of who your audience is.
