Has anyone heard anything from Senator Patty Murray in WA state? Her deadline was Nov. 15 and we have heard she does not interview. I guess no news is good news, but I am curious if anyone has any experience with her process. Thanks!

Yes, I have heard from Senator Murray (indirectly)! I received a nomination to the USAFA! I am so happy, but she has not directly called/mailed/emailed me about the nomination. I only found out when I checked my appointment status (I have an LOA) on the USAFA Online Application website, and it said, under "Nomination Status":
    Status: Received
    Nominator: Senator Patty Murray
So, she hasn't sent out the letters saying whether you got the nomination or not. Good luck!

We have not heard anything from Senator Murray except a letter telling us our package was complete.

Senator Cantwell's office says: Our office will be making our nomination selection at the end of January. Once we finalize our decisions, we will be mailing letters to all students letting them know whether or not they received one from our office.

I'm sorry. Have you heard from your Congressman? I assume your daughter applied to every source of nomination?

The Senators in WA coordinate nominations with each other and the Congressmen. They usually do not give duplicate nominations. Meaning most likely you will not get a nomination from a Senator and your Congressman. This way they can send as many different names as possible to the academy.

J Collins - are you in the 9th Congressional district? That is the one we are in and my son was told, for USMA, it is the most competitive district in the state.

They Coordinate.... hmmm interesting because Cantwell's office said they are not even looking at any yet ?!?

Yes we are in the 9th ... she wants MMA so that's okay if everyone else wants Westpoint :) I guess because Ft Lewis and McChord are here...
and She specified that she is just looking for the USMMA, no #2, #3 or #4...

That is strange because the USMA Field Force told me they coordinate the nominations. Maybe it is different for MMA. I do think it is more competitive because of all the military in the area. My son was only applying for one academy so I don't have experience with anything other than USMA.

Good luck to your daughter. I hope she hears soon, because I remember how much torture the waiting was.

This area is split and we happen to be in the boundaries for the 9th district. An USMA admissions officer told my son that if he had been in any other district in the state he would have received a direct admit to class of 2010. Because we are in the 9th he was not the highest ranked candidate in the district. He was offered civil prep and took that option to get into the class of 2011. He was not thrilled with that extra year of college but I believe it helped him get through plebe year. :thumb:

They can coordinate, by not duplicating ea other. So Sen. Murray can pass on his slate to the congressman and than that selection list can be passed back to the other sen. Just because you receive no from one doesn't mean you are not comp. In NY they state if you have a nom from another source we will not be considering you. In NC you can get all noms, but if you have your name in for AFA, USMA, and the MMA you might get 1 for the AFA, 1 for USNA and 1 USMMA. It doesn't necessarily mean you will get 3 to one SA.

It is not uncommon for them to talk with each other. They want to spread the wealth around.

If you even look at the scenario you have given, 1 Sen has announced their slate, now the cong. are meeting and the other sen will be in Jan. That means you could do your cong interview get a nod, than the sen in Jan. will pick from the remaining ones that have not received it yet.

I am only surprised that the Sen is doing it in the end of jan., b/c I thought all slates have to be in by Feb. To me that would mean they are going to rack and stack on paper.

Do they still need the nomination to be offered a prep school billet? I guess I was just surprised that Murray filled all 10 of her noms for the USMMA.

We have already looked at NMMI for USMMA prep school and actually
JC-junior is pretty excited about that option, even if it is an extra year of school, as we all believe it would give her an "up" entering as a freshman with a bit more prep time. And I like the idea of her being closer to home for one more year  after all she is just 17, until next September.

She carries a 3.71, and her class standing is 9/147 (end of Junior year), she is involved in year round sports, and tons of community service (with church and school) and a 13 yr Girl Scout (earning her silver award (2nd highest for GSA). Her SAT & ACT scores were not up to par for her (she took them both a couple of times), and she is retaking them both in Jan/Feb. Her PFE for CGA was 191, and she is taking CFA today for USMMA.

We are in Oregon and my son got noms from both senators and our congressman all for the same academy. I thought that was a waste of slots that could be used for someone else...however we are probably one of the least competitive states for S.A., not a lot of "pro-military" types around here.

I don't think so. If she does prep this year she will need a nomination next year. I don't know how MMA handles this but for the USMA preps it is not a problem. They write recommendation letters to the senators and congressman explaining how the candidate was picked for civil prep and usually that does the trick. If for some reason the MOCs don't nominate the candidate they "find" them some other type of nomination.

My son went to NMMI and had many friends that were prepping for the service academies. All the prep kids take the same classes so they get to know each other. I didn't mind that extra year - it gave me time to adjust too.
