My son received a letter from West Point stating that he had been placed on the national waiting list for admittance to West Point. To me, the letter read, thanks but no thanks. What exactly is the waiting list? It did state that he had been found fully qualified for West Point and that he should continue to send his information such as grades, activities and so forth.

Does he have a non-congressional nomination (ie Presidential, JROTC)?

Please don't think that........my oldest received a national waiting list letter, then 1 week later received call from our MOC telling him he had received an appointment. The national waiting list means...................if we can find an way you're in. You still have a lot of time! May is still a long time away.

Also, keep updating his file....the more WP has to work with the better!

Has anyone without an LOA received an appointment yet? The only ones I've heard of had LOAs.

I have a Presidential Nomination as well, but I am also applying for MOC nominations. The Presidential category has over 500 applicants competing for 100 slots that are VERY competitive.

It’s okay to be competing in more than one nomination category; so anyone with a Presidential nomination is still urged to compete for a nomination from members of congress.

My son is also applying to all other nominating sources. But, with the wait list letter, I was curious if he should perhaps concentrate somewhere else besides West Point.

Do not read something into that letter that is not there; your son has no reason to divert his efforts at this time. If he has a strong file, there is no reason to give up this early in the process. Keep updating with new information, achievements, etc...best of luck to him.

Go Army!

what? they've started already? oh my gosh, i gotta finish off my essays!

I think the NWL is for people who are not chosen to fill the nomination quota. For instance, if you're number 2 in you district that has one slot, the number 1 guy will get that, you're on the NWL.

I read that each year, WP takes at least 150 people from the NWL.

My son was on the NWL last year, he did get in. So, don't think its all negative.

Also, remember, not all MOC's use nominations...........then someone on waiting list can be given a nomination not used. Son and I attended WP presentation where it was explained...all on list assigned a numerical number, when spots open, top of the list gets offer and so on. That is why it is so important to keep updating file. Remember, someone may get offer, and not decided until Feb. they are not interested. They say no...................next on the waiting list gets an offer

I understand that, but none of our nominations for our district or state are even due yet. The deadlines are October 31 for those. That's why I was a bit surprised that he received a waiting list letter already. I just thought that to get one this early, it could be a bad thing.

I don't think it's a bad thing...I think it's just a thing. Where else are they going to put him? Probably they are not sure if he is as strong as the candidates who will be completing files over the next few months. He is in a holding pattern; he needs to accomplish something great in the next few months...can you get that arranged? :thumb: It may be that after he secures an MOC nom, he'll get an offer. MOST candidates hear by March; hearing (yes) in Sept-Oct is extremely early, and not the norm. There is no indication at all that you should think of this as a lost cause; it's just a long waiting game, and you have barely begun to wait. Hang in there!

You have a good point. But I still honestly think it isn't all that bad. This year they are pretty careful. They are probably waiting to see the whole picture before setting a threshhold.

Not to be harsh, but with 193 posts maybe you should spend more time doing keystrokes in MS Word instead of on this forum and get cracking. I wouldn't even call myself a Cadet Candidate yet until my file was finished. All 2015 candidates should worry about what they can control and reduce the analysis. Spend time putting out the best application possible and after it is completed and submitted work hard on improving that already completed application by raising test scores & grades, improving CFA ability, and demonstrating leadership.

I don't feel the need to explain myself. I have my reasons. But i'll say that I have worked my butt off to my fullest extent starting a NHS chapter at school, sports, school, and after school activities.

Doesn't mean that. I was put on the NWL last year. Now I'm here. It means exactly what it says. Just keep sending info.

CroatanMom - Only qualified candidates get placed on the NWL.
I highly suggest that your son place a phone call or send an email to his Regional Commander in the admissions office. He should ask the question directly and ask what it means.
This is a good and fair question and a great way to begin a dialogue.
Good Luck to him.
