One of my MOC's is Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. She is in the process of revising her nomination request packet and won't have it online until June 1st. I want to wait to ask for my LOR's at the same time from my teachers. Do you think I should ask my teachers to fill out the LOR's during the summer (I will mail them the information they need since school will be out), or should I just wait until fall of senior year to talk to them? How important is it to have the nomination paper work turned in early (August)? Also, if I wait until fall of senior year, that's when I will need general LOR's for the actual SA I'm applying for. These poor teacher's are going to be inundated. -officer

What my daughter did was have a casual conversation with her teachers at the end of her junior year. she asked if they would write a LOR for her and when she should get them the details in the fall.
Getting the LOR's done this spring is not essential.
Wait until you get the nomination application before asking for a LOR. Some may want a letter and others have a checklist or questionairre to be filled out.
Since you don't know the requirements of Hutchinson's application you can't ask for a LOR for her yet.

No advantage in getting your nomination application in early. Just by the deadline. At least for 2 Texas US Senators. The selection committee does not meet until after the deadline. Also Senator Hutchinson's office waits to award nominations until after the U S Representatives make their selections so that she can offered nominations to those that did not get U S Rep nomination.

Son got his letters of recommendation from his teachers in the spring. Just have the letter writers write one letter with different salutations: one to each Senator by name, one to your U S Rep, and one made out to the Air Force Academy Selection Board.

The MAIN thing is to get your application to the AFA completely completed before (probably at least a month) BEFORE the AFA Selection Board first meets in early Oct. Son did that and got LOA in early Oct. He did not even have nomination applications finished then as the deadlines weren't yet, if I recall.

Application online!

Senator Hutchison's application is available online today! The applicant needs to create an account in order to view it, so I guess son can do that when he gets home from school later.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison

My son got his nomination for 2013 from Sen. Hutchison. Her office was wonderful to work with. However, I do not think there is any advantage to having the paperwork in early, as they don't finalize nominations until the very last day of Jan 31st. That part was very difficult and nerve wracking. Best wishes in your application process.

ps - be sure to check your spelling of her last name as it has no "n" in it.
