What kinds of watches and luggage do most mids have?

Not much help here...
but those with plastic bands seems to sweat more and stick to the wrists and break pretty easy..

something waterproof / water resistant would probably be best..

My son loves his Ironman with the velcro band. Make sure it is a band and watch that gets wet. The Candidates may not have a watch during Indoc, but after then can.

As for luggage, you may want to go and buy a nice rolling duffel bag. This can double as report luggage and also sea year luggage. My son got a $30 rolling duffel from Walmart which has held up quite well through first sea year lugging books and the like. A sea bag is also good, but they will be issued one of them during indoc.

Son loves this watch:

He had a fossil that the metal band corroded away while he was at sea year. He never took it off & the metal got into his skin. Not cool. The band of the Momentum is velcro & a darn good price at the link above considering that I'd paid about 30 more bucks for it.

Good luck with the bag issue. I think son is on bag #4. We've done the Walmart ones & the more expensive from L.L. Bean. Didn't seem to matter much. They pretty much all get destroyed with all the travels.

I highly recommend the bags made by Luggage Works. I've been using them for years. They are expensive but they hold up. If they break most of the parts can be replaced.(wheels, straps, handles, clips) They have different size roller boards, duffel bags, and computer bags and the all attach the the roller bag. It appears our kids are going to travel around the world. Why not have the bags that will make it easier.

This is where I buy my bags from.
