I understand it would vary from school to school and branch to branch, but I was wondering about how often does a cadet/midshipman wear a uniform on campus? And do they have the same boundary rule for wearing uniforms off campus for ROTC as they do for Service Academies? Or can ROTC cadets and midshipman wear civilian clothes off campus? For example, if I am traveling home for a holiday or weekend, do I have to wear my uniform? I recently received an NROTC scholarship and was curious.

My DS wears his uniform twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday the same days he has his NROTC class. He needs to be in uniform from morning till 4pm. Civilian dress the rest of the time. Travel on holidays and weekends is always civilian dress.

Most units will wear uniforms one day a week, typically on their lab day, from very early until about 4 or 5pm. Outside of lab, uniforms may be worn for periodic events such as duty or optional trips/training.

OP was probably asking only about ROTC at a civilian college, but I'll add this about ROTC at SMC's:

I can't speak for all SMC's, but at VMI everyone is in ROTC and the uniform requirements are more like a SA. The cadets must be in uniform pretty much anywhere on post and when they are in the county. Outside of the county they can wear civilian clothes. I believe that like a SA, some of the uniform requirements are relaxed in 1st class (senior) and maybe 2nd class year.

Like 5day commented, My son is AFROTC at a state university. He wears his uniform two days per week (on the days he has ROTC activities)

AFROTC at large state school:

Once a week we wear our uniform all day (lab in morning/rest of the day while on campus)

2 days a week we have to wear it to ROTC class, but we don't have to wear it besides class if we don't want to (I normally do to my other classes, no big deal and easier). Also wear it to any ROTC activities.

Overall it's no big deal, we wear our utility uniforms the vast majority of the time as well.

In regards to off campus, we have the same rules as the Air Force as a whole; fine to grab something to eat/something quick, just don't wear it for long shopping trips etc.
