can anyone tell me how many passes a plebe (not sure of the AirForce term) gets his first year? Does it make a difference if he is a football player? And I don't mean getting off campus for games, actually passes.

    Thanks

The USAFA system works a bit different than the one at WP.
A pass is good for one day. Example: If I sign out at 10AM on Saturday, with one pass, I have to be back by Taps that night. I
If I use two passes, I can leave overnight. Three will get me from Friday to Sunday night.

4 degrees get a basic pass package of 10 passes per semester, and can get extra for being on merit lists. (IIRC, it is 10. They changed the system this year. It used to be 5 per half-semester.)

Depending on a lot of things you can get more too. I'm a freshman I've got 27 of them for the rest of the semester....I won't be running out anytime soon.

I got the normal ten. Then I got five for making deans list, five for making commandant's list, five for my squad being in the top three last semester and then I got two for random little things that someone thought was good enough for a reward.

And football players leave all the time without passes (even if they're restricted) because they're with the team. Your son wouldn't have to worry.

By one day do you mean 24 hours or 12 hours?

Until taps that night, so between 0 and 24 hours.

    that's not how it works.

One pass means you have to be back by TAPS the same day you signed out.

Think of TAPS as your curfew. It is a set time. If i sign out on one pass at 4:30pm on a saturday i need to be back by 1:30am as that is the usual TAPS time on the weekend.

Just remember that if you are an IC, keep it honest and do what you say you are going to do when you leave.

As a 4th Class Cadet, don't count on getting the number of passes mentioned above. Passes can be very much squadron dependent. 4th Class Cadets at Air Force are in the midst of the 40 days leading up to Recognition. Even though this is a 3 day federal holiday weekend, some squadrons have restricted 4th Class Cadets to base. Some 4th Class Cadets have special passes this weekend (SSS) to fly home, go to see GF, BF or family -- but others are restricted and won't be leaving the Academy. If you are not on Dean's List, not on Commandant's List and not an IC athlete, and your squadron decides to restrict all 4th Class Cadets because of squadron performance on knowledge tests or other things -- you may not get passes -- even though other 4th Class Cadets, in other squadrons, do. You also may not find out until the last minute that you are going to get, or not get, a pass. It requires a lot of flexibility and handling disappointment when you, and some or all of the freshman in your squadron, end up restricted at the last minute.

Oh, yeah. I've got 27 passes like I said. But I've also been restricted for most of the weekends this semester for a variety of reasons, some my fault some completely out of my hands. So I won't really be able to use most of these until after recognition.

Thanks for mentioning that, I should have.

I'm on the ski team, so I haven't had to use any of my passes this semester, even though I have 20. I'm saving them for after recognition, when there's less risk involved in planning things that can be vetoed last minute by training staff.

One thing you can do to maximum time away from the Academy and not use up your passes is join a club that has organized activities that don't use passes to attend their activities. For example, our son joined the ski club. The ski club is providing transportation to Keystone this weekend Friday evening to Monday evening. Going with the ski club will not use up any of the cadets passes for any of the time gone this weekend.
