It seems I have seen welding mentioned a couple of times relating to MMA. Does anyone know if welding is part of the curriculum, and if so whether an engineering or deck major is more likely to take welding and/or use it?

Yes. Marine engineering majors take machine shop 1/2. Both involve welding and manipulating metals. Deckies....take none of that. We do learn some of this stuff (a limited amount) in our engine course first term.

Son enjoyed learning welding and did quite a bit of it during his first sea year (way better than scraping paint). IN fact, when he returned from sea term, he worked with teacher during his "free time" to earn a could welding certifications. Will it help his career? Probably not, but he enjoyed perfecting a useful skill.

Can you weld? Can you make coffee? When an engine cadet walks on a ship the first time he/she frequently encounters these two questions. If you can answer yes to both you will go a long way towards making friends and getting a good evaluation.

Yup, the more skills you show up with as an "observer" cadet. . .the more work that they will let you do and the more you will learn. As a cadet, never turn down an opportunity or job when offered.

"I don't know how, but I'd love to learn" should be every cadet's mantra.
