West Point chances--on wait list

Go Army: I believe the AOG students hear beginning in March w/ everyone else...it will be here soon!! Hang tight!

Actually - AOG students will probably hear anytime from the end of January into May. With most getting their appointment by the end of March. Keep in mind the Appointment will be mailed to your son at his school.
GoArmy - the appointment WILL come - keep the faith!

I know how hard it is to wait for both you and your son. 4 years ago I was in the exact same place you are today. My son physically qualified, received nominations but in the end was not given an offer of admission. Dad is a grad and my son had several visits with us over the years to West Point. We did discuss back up plans - what if he didn't make it in... My husband told him if he wanted to be an officer ROTC was another way to go. He applied and also received a 4 year ROTC scholarship.

When he found out he was not excepted to West Point he was disappointed BUT that only strenthened his resolve - to try again. He immediately restarted his file for the next year. He spoke with Admissions again to find out what he needed to do to strengthen his file. They wanted to see how he did academically his freshman year at college.
He started his freshman year, was in ROTC and worked hard (a private dorm room helped) at the end of the first semester he submitted his grades.
In January we received the call we had been waiting for 2 years from our congressman - OFFER of ADMISSION!
Our son finished his freshman year at our state university and entered West Point in 2006. He will graduate on 22 May Class of 2010.
While an extra year in school may seem like a long time when your 17 or 18 - we told him it's only 365 days - take it a day at a time.
Was it worth it..... you bet.
Best of luck to you!

Our son got an AOG scholarship, has great grades and has a nomination. How long and what are the chances. This is the second time around.

We were in the same boat back in 2006-07. My son was one of the last AOG preps at NMMI to get his appointment and was very anxious. It finally came in early April. Keep the faith - it will come! :thumb:

My son is also fully qualified and we got the letter stating he is also on the NWL. He has three nominations so I am hoping that will help his chances? Does anyone know how he can update his file? Does he have to contact admissions and have them do it or is there some way for him to add his acheivements he has had this year? His 7th semester transcripts are already there btw.

Thanks so much! Good luck to everyone!

Go Army!!

From his admissions pages, go to contact us. Just give them what you want to update and they will add it to his application.

Maybeeeee

Having three nominations does nothing to add to his score. He doesn't get extra points for having more nominations. The nomination only provides the legal authority to offer an appointment. So - it won't help him get off the NWL. His chance of an appointment is going to depend on how far down the NWL he is.

Now - since he has 3 nominations he is represented on three slates. Offers from the slates have probably gone out but if the offer is rejected they move on down to the next person. If the other candidates on the slates either become not qualified or reject their offer - it's possible he could eventually win an appointment from his MOC slate.

What to do now? I suggest he make contact with his Regional Commander and ask him. Of course, continue to update his file and show "the love". Your son also should give serious consideration as to whether or not he would accept a AOG scholarship for prep school. If so, then he should talk to his regional commander and let him know.

I was on the National Waiting List for West Point last year and eventually found out that I was declined an appoinment. Of course I am probably wrong by saying this, but it is likely that it is very hard to actually be accepted off that list, and maybe not till the week of reporting day. I primary wanted Air Force and recieved a Falcon Scholarship, if offered the chance to attend a prep school I would definitely reccomend attending one.

That is not entirely true, my son was 3Q'd and have 2 Nom's and received the NWL letter for class of 2013. He had also applied for and received AROTC & NROTC(MARINE option) So while not thrilled he knew the dream was just taking a different direction. Two weeks after getting the letter he received a phone call from MOC telling him that he would be receiving his appointment that week. So I guess my point is hang in there. It isn't over until you give up!
