Does anyone have information about the Women's Glee Club--is it hard to get a spot? I was checking out their website and schedule and it seems to be a fantastic opportunity for cadets to travel while there. Also, can anyone explain why they have a separate men's and women's glee club:just curious?

I have no information on USNA performing arts programs, but as a community performer and former president of the VMI Glee Club (I know, you're impressed:shake:), I'd say it's because all-male and all-female ensembles produce different sounding music than mixed voices. Thus, I'd imagine it has something to do with wanting to keep with the preservation of those choral traditions. Many colleges (and I think USNA does this too, from what I recall of their concerts) have even smaller groups (usually acapella) that fit certain niche styles (barbershop, country/western, pop) that come from the main chorus/glee club.

I live in Annapolis and have seen the Men's Glee at USNA. They are very good (exceptional for a college group, especially for a school like USNA that does not have a conservatory/music major). I recall seeing them perform several years ago, and they did a medley of TV theme songs which was awesome. I tried to get our club at VMI to do it, but no dice. So they are high caliber singers, and their show is humorous as well as traditional. I recall them doing the funny TV stuff and some other pop, and then following with the Navy Hymn, Blue and Gold etc. in a very powerful performance.

I do think that both men and women do perform together in some ensembles (maybe the chapel choirs?) and I seem to remember having seen the two Glees performing together at least once, but an expert would have to chime in.

Thank you very much. I think it is wonderful! I am going to make an effort to see them perform when we are there in November.

Makes sense to me!

My son, class of 2014, is in the men's Glee Club and loves it. I know of a lovely young lady on this forum who is in the Women's Glee Club, so maybe she will chime in! However, I also know she, as with all Plebes, is amazingly busy, so I won't share her info but will let her add her input if she chooses. Auditions are held toward the end of Plebe summer, so if you are there and interested, by all means try out!

There are Catholic and Protestant choirs, which I believe only sing during chapel services. There is also Gospel Choir which is a performing group comprised of male and female singers.

Hi! Well I'm in women's glee club. It's a great club and not its not hard to get into. You audition during the summer with whatever of a voice you have and they base you basically off of if u can somewhat sing in tune with the piano. Not much else. Good luck!

lil3laiin3laiin, thank you. That is good to know.
