for those of us who will be entering the academy this year, what do we not need?

I know they issue desktop computer, calculator, backpack, and all the clothes we will need/are allowed to have.
what else do they issue?
i read somewhere that they also issue a notebook computer (laptop), is this true?
if we show up wearing the right shoes (all white new balance), will they still make us store them and wear the new shoes they give us?
anything else?

All appointees will eventually receive a "Permit to Report" package. Among the paperwork will be several lists of items:
-things you may NOT bring (contraband items)
-things you MUST bring (photo ID, portions of the paperwork, etc.)
-things you MAY bring (religious scriptures, a few photos, etc)

Class of 2013 was issued both a desktop computer and a netbook. Class of 2012 was issued the desktop, but not the netbook. The characteristics of this year's computer will eventually show up on the appointees-only page of the USNA web site.

On I-day, you will be required to change out of your civilian clothes and shoes, BUT you will have a chance to stow things in your room. This includes both the many things that get issued to you that day, as well as the things you bring with you that you are allowed to keep. You WILL be allowed to keep a suitable pair of running shoes, so long as they are "mostly white." IOW, do not expect to be able to use neon orange running shoes during Plebe Summer. If you show up wearing the exact style of New Balance shoe, they probably won't know (or care) the difference if they still look new. Your account will still be charged (invisibly to you) for new ones, however, since they are part of the standard issue items.

My plebe shocked me by not bringing the socks, briefs and under-shirts I had bought for him as instructed in the package for I-Day. Fortunately he was right...he never needed any of it.

He walked through the doors with a small duffle bag (mainly to hold his civilian clothes once he got changed), a bubble wrapped cell phone/charger, paperwork and wallet.

That is truly all you need. And you can come w/o a cellphone -- they'll provide one for you.

For women, I recommend you bring your own undergarments. In my day you had to bring your own bras. Fit is important, especially when you're running/sweating a lot. I recommend cotton for the summer at least. I don't believe they issue bras so not bringing them could be a real problem:eek: -- but could be wrong about that today. Also, I'd bring at least some pairs of underwear. Jockey shorts are Jockey shorts; all women's underwear isn't created equal. Just make sure its 100% white and that it covers all -- summer whites are kind of see-through.

Remember that laundry is only done once a week and, when you're sweating all the time, you go through a lot more clothes. You can, of course, wash in your sink . . . IF you have time.:shake:

Take the battery out of the Cell Phone and place it in a zip lock bag with the phone. By the time they get it back if it is still in the phone and they haven't turned it off it will be dead. They don't have a long time to call and charging the phone is a hassle. Buy a cheap "distinctive" phone case for the phone with their name on it. Like bright red, blue, purple or pink. When they start to reissue the phones for the calls it makes it a lot easier for your Plebe to identify his or her phone.

2014-scada, the phone was returned a few hours before each of the three scheduled phone calls, early enough to get the batteries charged. After the calls they were collected again and returned for PPW. After Re-form they were returned to the Plebes for good :)

They don't have a long time to call

Last year they got 3 30-minute calls, which last FOREVER if you expect to get cut off after 5 minutes and cram everything you have to say in those first precious moments.

^^^ It has really changed.:shake: We could hear Cadre counting off the seconds in the background. In any case, my Mid is waiting with great anticipation for Plebe Summer:smile: Returning from Quantico she should be really prepped. USNA1985 is correct for women. Comfortable Sports Bras, Body Glide for Men & Women and broken in "mostly white" running shoes. Body Glide is something runners know about. You can find it at many stores that cater to runners. It prevents chafing and rashes and is a godsend during the heat and humidity of Plebe Summer.

I included the body glide in the very first care package. And more later as well.

Wow, this is great info from everyone. We have lived in dry climates until this year, so the Body Glide is something we will definitely have to check out.

The only time my son has ever talked for 30 minutes straight was the night he came back from NASS. He'll probably talk to us for 10 minutes then take a power nap...if that's allowed.

Nap? :eek: :yllol::yllol:

Well, maybe if he can sleep with his eyes open while standing in T-court

during Plebe Summer already?!?:thumb:

It took my son a bit longer to acquire that skill:rolleyes:

What should we expect to do during plebe summer? Obviously exersice a lot but I can't imagine them exercising us for 7 weeks all day. I know about the tests for getting out of classes but still don't know what else to expect.

I went back and forth about whether or not I should bring the clothes that were mentioned in the PTR packet (I had some people tell me to bring them just in case and others telling me it was a complete waste of time, money, and space). I ended up bringing half of the recommended list... And my entire duffle bag was taken from me when I came onto our company deck and locked away in the wardroom for the entire summer. I was able to take out my bag with my shower items about a week and a half in... However my parents did bring my clothes with them over parents weekend and it helped to have fresh clothes at the start of the Academic Year :).

Hope this isn't a dumb question, but what kind of clothes did your parents bring to you at PPW? Are plebes allowed to wear "regular" clothes after plebe summer? Thanks!

Falconchick that video was great!!! Thank you. I appreciate it. Anyone else who wants to know more about plebe summer and what to expect, consult the link above. Great video.
