What do we not need?

mid.bell--glad you had a chance to watch it, my son has watched it several times--I think things will go much better if you know somewhat what to expect!

No, plebes are not allowed to wear civilian clothes. Unless they are away on leave. Like home at Thanksgiving or Christmas. They travel in uniform. My plebe spent Spring Break in San Diego with a company-mate's family. Obviously he did not want to go to the beach, etc in his uniform. I sent a box of shorts, tees, etc. He stored this with a youngster.

The "clothes" parents might bring to PPW would be the sox and undies requested at I-Day. My plebe carried with him issued shorts and blue rim when we met up for PPW each day. He changed into these to relax in the hotel room. Parents who would consider bringing civilian clothes are quite simply encouraging their plebes to violate rules. The plebes were asked, at the conclusion of PPW, "Did you wear civilian clothes?"

Honestly, people, why do you even devote any thoughts as to whether or not to bring the requested items (sox, undies) to I-Day. The military is all about following orders. Your company may or may not let you use/keep the items. You will not know this until you arrive at USNA. Even if they don't, those items will be welcome after a grueling plebe summer. Bring what they ask you to, no more, no less. It is not a complicated concept.

I agree with JennyP, but my husband is more along the lines of some of the other posters, "What do I REALLY HAVE to do?" We always have interesting discussions at our house. When it comes to the 'administrative and management' stuff, I usually win, so my son will be traveling with the items listed. I'm a big one for crossing those t's and dotting those i's! My older son, a Navy musician, says that learning the importance of following orders from me has been helpful to him during his service. Even when he doesn't understand the reasons at the time, he is always glad in the end that he did as he was told. He has been very successful so far. I hope the same will be true for our academy appointee.

I also wanted to thank Falconchic! We loved that video at our house and even sent it along to the grandparents, who are just as proud as Mom and Dad. I cried while I was watching it with my Mid-to-be. To see his excitement and desire to rise to the challenges and to hear him singing along with the song at the end of the video (He remembered it from NASS.) was absolutely priceless. Thank you for posting it!!:thumb:

If you don't bring any of the items they have listed to bring, you'll be fine. They give you scores of socks, why bring scores more to have to fold and find somewhere to store with the smiley face up? Unless you are the type to lose and/or not care for your things, don't add to what is already going to be a pretty heavy load to carry at the outset of your summer at Camp Tecumseh.

Majikmom, you are very welcome, we love it at our house too! Just think, next year we'll be watching it hoping to catch a glimpse of our own!

Don't know about girls, but guys were not allowed to even keep the underwear/ undershirts/socks that we brought. We could keep wallets, running shoes, and bibles. Everything else was taken. They even gave us a new bag of over the counter drugs and took our old ones. Don't worry about buying New Balance running shoes. You can wear whatever you want to PEP, but you're going to be issued the white court shoes that you'll wear around.

I don't know how things are handled today but, in my day, if you didn't bring bras, you wouldn't have any. Given the fit issues, I'd be very surprised if you weren't allowed to keep those that comply with whatever requirements they have. But, things may have changed.

We also were allowed to keep underwear. But I think we may also have been issued some.

In our day, there were no female upperclass in our company. The guys weren't anxious to teach us how to fold our stuff nor to inspect how we folded it.:shake: Unless it looked like a disaster, they left it alone. Of course, now that there are upperclass women in every class and every company, I'm sure there is more attention to detail.
