What exactly is "Varsity" for applications?

Our daughter was a national-level athlete in a sport not offered in HS in our state. She actually trained 30+ hours/week year round and ended up as an IC. I'm pretty sure she answered no to that question - because she was not a varsity athlete at her HS. I remember thinking that it was an odd question given her circumstances. But I really think that the application as a whole will bear these things out. It was readily apparent despite her "no" that she was serious about athletics. I think there were several places to put athletic awards and commendations even though not on a school varsity sport. The CFA results help too.

Also, what do you mean by a counselor has to submit an electronic file? Does that mean just verifying the activites you completed?

Sorry for taking so long to respond.

Your GC will submit the school profile electronically, that means they will answer tons of questions, such as % of students that take AP/IB, regs to take those classes, school ranking system, grade scale scale system (w vs uw) go Ivy/4yr/2yr/nothing, and sports offered at the school. You will never ever see it.

The AFA will use this information in their process for the WCS.

As I stated a candidate will not be dinged if they compete in a sport that a school does not offer. I.E. swimming, tennis, golf, TKD.

They will look at the GC's input especially from an academic POV.

For example:

Top 35% of your class, but 10% are accepted IVY, and 20% 4 yr. You are at 35% below the Ivy and 4 yr.
Conversely, you are 35%, 25% go IVY, 35% go 4 yr. 40% go 2 yr. Totally different.

They also use the GC to see AP/IB/AICE. How many students in your class are taking AP/IB/AICE.
If 16 AP classes exist and you had a choice between honors, AP or Jump Start, they are going to fill in the blanks for the AFA regarding how your HS system works in the regards to Honors/AP and Jump.

They also will inform them regarding academic classes required for graduation.

Example: VA requires 3 years PE, NC requires 1 yr.

The VA student would not be dinged because for 3 yrs they had to take PE whereas, the NC student had to take only 1 yr. and could take more AP classes.

The AFA uses the GC's input to equalize the fact that every school is different from a national perspective, that includes academics and sports verification.

In a few months you will see threads stating the AFA changed their cgpa from what the school has on their record. Some go up, some go down. The change came from the AFA reviewing the school profile to their standards.

FWIW, if you have the hard copy of your SAT, and had it electronically sent to your 5 schools, you will get an insight regarding this issue. At the bottom of the hard copy, it shows what each school would consider your uwcgpa. For our DS AFA matched the top tier schools(Notre Dame, NYU, UPenn). His cgpa did not change, for lower tiers it was bumped up because of their admissions.

You are a candidate for 17, you need a Plan B. AFROTC scholarship is typically that plan. AFROTC is not like A/NROTC, it is not tied to the school, it is tied to candidate and their major. You can get a Type 1 non-tech, but be honest with yourself now. Type 1 non-tech is 5% of 5% of all scholarships awarded. Tech is 5% of all scholarships. Stats matter in every way.

Hope that helps.

XC and Varsity

From what I see "Varsity" is up to the institution that provided the sports. In my high school we had the top 10 runners on "Varsity"; however 7 moved on to districts and they were considered "starters for varsity." Its best to be honest as the board will probaly check in one way or another

Clarification

From what I am hearing- check with your athletic director for the definition of varsity athletics at your school.

What would you say if you were on the varsity roster, played, but did not earn a letter (our criteria to receive a letter is you have to start more than 50% of the games.)
