What happens if a cadet is in the academy and gets pregnant or gets a girl pregnant? I was wondering because things like this do happen. Thank you for the information in advance.

Concise and informative answer, Texasrocks *sarcasm*. In short, if you get someone pregnant or get pregnant yourself, you will be expelled. Although, there was a case recently of a pregnant midshipmen being allowed to graduate, but that was a rare case, as far as I know. It doesn't matter how you prevent it from happening, but do NOT get someone pregnant or get pregnant yourself. Also don't get married, as that too will get you expelled.

The technical rule is that no cadet can have legal dependants.
    Spouses and children definitely count!

There are two ways to get around the pregnancy issue.
    1. Don't have a kid.
    2. Have the child adopted by someone else. (Sometimes the cadet's parents will do this, but it opens a VERY complex can of legal worms...)

A cadet who gets pregnant has 3 options (and I had different classmates that I knew who chose all 3):

    1) Take a long weekend to "take care of" the problem
    2) Resign
    3) Take a year leave of absence to deliver the baby. However, the returning cadet can have no legal ties or responsibilities for the baby once they return. They could either give it up in a normal adoption, or (the choice the cadets I knew did) have their parents (or the dad) legally adopt the baby. When they graduate, the parents or whoever, can then allow them to again get legal responsibility for the baby.

Options for a male cadet would be similar. Assuming they wanted the baby, the cadet could of course resign, or could give up all legal ties to the baby. I'm not certain though how much of this decision would be the mom's if she decided she wanted child-support and wanted to keep dad responsible. I imagine it could become a huge legal snafu, which wouldn't be good for the cadet.

drumsrock - funny because we recently had this discussion (again!) with my son and how getting the GF pregnant would totally mess up his future. His response was "If I got her pregnant, I wouldn't have to worry about going to AF because her dad would kill me first!" :shake:

I wasn't aware that if you had the child adopted that you could get around the issue. My understanding was that like the whole marriage thing, even if you do rectify it (divorce), you will still get expelled.

Unless it's changed since I was at WP (and that may be possible), that wasn't the case. And they weren't really "expelled", just allowed to resign. And honestly, for the people I knew who did it, there really didn't seem to be that much stigma attached to it. As long as you were no longer "legally" responsible, then it was okay.

somewhat on topic. Current cadets - how bad is the temptation at the academy. I'm sure many have seen and "office and a gentleman." I've made my kid watch the movie to be aware of situations. I am sure cadets would be prime targets for kids from other schools and localities. Any perspective on this?

Texasrocks... a can of whoopA$$ would be putting it mildly at the fencers abode. We have TONS OF SWORDS and everyone knows how to use them.

I'm afraid a fencerboy or a fencergirl would look kind of like a waffle by the time we even started to "discuss options."

I know several AFA grads that got a girl pregnant while at the AFA. All of them were in committed relationships, and on graduation day married her. They circumvented the system by never putting his name on the birth certificate until after the marriage...in plain terms they actually adopted their birth children.
Was it right? That is for them to decide.

I will state this, don't be a FOOL, you are risking your career and education. Hormones will run wild, but a part of being an adult is considering the negative aspects of your actions.

I wonder about your question on many levels because it appears that you are placing your sex life into the equation...FYI, you will be so busy that if you have the ability to get "lucky" it will be with seeing a blue moon! The opportunities are not like traditional college where you put a smilie face on the dry erase board to warn your roomie!

Nothing has changed....we had a briefing right after Basic on this entire topic. They briefed us on our options were it ever to happen, which are the three options marciemi already posted.

LOL, you'll be the one to marry a cadet--Mark my words, DH swore he'd never date a "cadet chic", and 21 years later, he's still married to one. :yllol:
