Hi guys, I have recently started becoming interested in going to West Point and joining the army. I tried to look up some info but there are a lot of words that I don't know what they mean (plebes, r-day, etc) and when I look them up I'm just hit with more vocab that I don't know which makes me very confused. I was just wondering if someone could explain the generals of what happens once you get in?

Once you're accepted? Two things: your portal changes and you get a check list of things you must accomplish before you show up for "report day" (r-day). Some other things come in the mail. You work very hard to chase after everything on the list and send it back in in a timely manner. Some things are submitted electronically and others go snail mail (examples: panorex xray of your mouth, background check, report from your eye doctor). You are also given a list of things to report (show up) with, so you must track these items down (the correct boots, shoes, etc). In addition to this, you have to finish the school year with good grades, stay healthy and uninjured, and stay out of trouble.

I thought R-Day was Reception Day.

They will make you do a lot of work in order to build character. It will be fun though, and I encourage you to go for it. You have to be competitive and get your nominations. Remember that this is about being a soldier, and an Officer.

A good place to start are the stickies above. USMA.EDU is another great place to start. Look these sites over and the time lines in comparison of where you are. The question you asked is very broad. We don't know who are per say. It does take effort on your part.

Yes, it's reception day. I used "report" as that gives a better idea of what you do...you report for duty. I thought it clearer to those new to the lingo. Reception implies a party in their honor...and I guess it sort of is...there's food and gift shopping galore, and new cadets are given lots of stuff...so it really is a big party! =)

Hi brownnn. There are indeed a lot of acronyms. Check out this link. That should help you when you read some of the stickies on the USMA page.

Are you thinking about applying to the class of 2021? I'm not sure that you would still be able to find a nominating source for the class of 2020...
