What if my MOC is "unelected?"

Come Tuesday night, at least some MOCs will have been unseated. For those of you seeking noms, DO NOT FEAR.

As you know from government class, the new "class" of MOCs won't be seated until late January. Thus, the outgoing MOC will be the one to make noms. Most, if not all, of them will submit their slates before they leave office. For those that don't, they will probably leave a list for the "new guy/gal" who can submit them. I'm sure there are a handful of horror stories of gaps, but rest assured they are extremely rare. Elections happen every 2 yrs (for reps), people get booted out or leave voluntarily every year, and so there is nothing unusual here.

Thus, if you already have a nom or get a nom from a MOC who is leaving (voluntarily or otherwise), you will be fine.

That is good to know. This has been weighing heavily on my mind too. I voted early and, I won’t lie, I seriously considered pulling the lever for our current rep—with nominations pending and all—but I just couldn’t do it, not even with my daughter’s nomination hanging in the balance. Had to vote on principle.

 Everyone remember to go out and VOTE!

Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, representing Michigan's 13th Congressional District, lost in the August primary. Her website is 1 year out of date.

Good luck to all in the 13th District!

I remember last year Senator Ted Kennedy (RIP) died in office. His interim had a procedure or something though (I wasn't a candidate I just looked at his website).

She is still in office. Has she indicated she will not be making nominations?

Due to an Illinois Supreme Court decision, Senator Roland Burris's appointment to complete the term of Barack Obama ends on November 3. His website just refers visitors to other Illinois MOCs. Interviews previously were scheduled for mid-November. I guess we'll just have to contact his replacement and hope Burris passed the files on.

Senator Burris

Senator Burris moved up the application dates and has made his selections already.

We saw that, called his office, and were told to get the app in soon. We faxed it the next business day. Have sent several items to add to the file, e.g., LOA, but have had no response to anything. I was told by our rep's academy contact that Burris's replacement could nominate, too. We'll fill out another app if that is the case.

BTW, I speak from personal experience (albeit quite a few years ago). My parents were actively working to unseat my current Rep. They were plankton on the vast chain of political life. I got the nom. The Rep lost. I still got the nom.

I'm not trying to be a downer but I think that Burris gave out all 10 slots for his nominations, as I asked the secretary at his office after my interview how many people were getting interviewed and he said quite a few. And I know personally that at least 2 nominations were given out for the Naval Academy.

Well, we pursued his nomination as well as that of Durbin and our rep. If we didn't make his list, we hope that we'll be one of the other two. Our rep's point person has been very positive for us saying we should see the appointment in December or January.

Burris was weird. He changed the dates for having an app in but said nothing about changing the interview dates. His website essentially says "Call someone else."

Yes it was weird I only caught it because I randomly checked his website. Just wondering what district are you in and what SA are you applying to?

My son's nomination just came in the mail today from a Senator who was an interim. The newly elected Senator who will assume his seat is in the position of being able to fill the seat at any time. He does not have to wait until January like many of the others.

Hopefully that change would not invalidate the nomination my son just received when the new Senator takes the office would it?

ColtDad: I cannot imagine that a new senator would invalidate a nomination already awarded. Surely they have more to do than that at this juncture in their legislative career! I think you can consider yourself (your DS actually) nominated!

One of our senators is being replaced this month. His replacement said that the current senator has already submitted his nominations, so the new senator will not have any until next year.

Noms need to be submitted by the end of January to the SA's. MOC's would not invalidate them because they would not have the time to select their new choices. Even in the case of an interim starting tomorrow, it would create great havoc on the SA.

Additionally, I think MOC's have more on their mind and plate than invalidating the noms.

Finally, if the MOC has already submitted the list I can guarantee you by Jan., many of the candidates on their slates would have been apptd. You can't really take back an apptmt because the MOC invalidated the slate due to election issues. remember if the candidate has an LOA, all they need is the nom for the apptmt. By the time your MOC hit the ground, that candidate would become an appointee, again that would be a huge kink in the system if the new MOC invalidated the previous slate.

This system has been around for eons. Actually, the MOCs receive yrly briefings in July on the process. They understand the system very well even during re-election yrs.

I have been here for 3 yrs and never have I heard of a slate being invalidated.

Rep unseated

Our congressional rep lost his re-election bid. DS got a call tonight from the administative assistant informing him that there will be no interviews as the rep is closing down his offices. DS was told that the decision will be made on the basis of his package alone. He will find out within a few weeks if he has a nomination.
