What route to take?

Deepdraft and KP2001 were personally and professional unkind. They wrote exactly what they intended to write........"ground control...glad you got a laugh out of it" ....Grey Stack Air Lines....keep us posted when you return from space........ " .....

I do consider deepdraft and KP2001 comments hurtful and mocking. Next time I will be more direct addressing these kinds of comments to the specific persons as I have here.

If you can find one instance of me being "personally and professional unkind" then I ask you to quote it and I will be more than happy to apologize or edit my remarks. My comments being "hurtful and mocking": again, please find one instance of any of my comments being made in that manner. Again I will be more than happy to apologize/edit as necessary.

I think if you go back and read from the top you will see that I merely make statements that bring a sense of reality to what is likely to happen if someone pursues a path with NASA.

BTW: Grey Stack Airlines is a reference to the Naval Aviation. Gray Stack=naval warship, Airlines=aviation.

Jasperdog and kp2001, I’ll take ownership of the ‘snarky’ comment..

I think what Moose Mom needs is a dose of how it is in the ‘real world’ Merchant Marine.

Here’s a question for all of you that follow this forum..

If I had my choice between having ADM’s Busby or Greene with their Masters Licenses or any one of the last four outstanding young 2nd Mates on my ship (1 KP [and kp2001 knows who I'm talking about here], 1 Mass Maritime and 2 CMA) to fill an open 2nd Mates job, who do think I would take?

If you answered ‘one of the Admirals with a Masters License’ you’d be wrong.

I want mates that are committed to going to sea in the MERCHANT MARINE. They have sailed either on my ship before or maybe a sister ship or a similar ship type. They are accustomed to the working routines of containership operations. They’re comfortable in heavy far east traffic, they’re THOROUGHLY familiar with the ECDIS, ARPA and GMDSS equipment and they can be trusted on the bridge to know when to call me for assistance. The ‘Mate’ and I both want someone that stands a good deck watch too. Someone that is able to make a proper ‘round’ of the deck and knows what to look for. Someone that, in absents of the ‘Mate’ can handle the ‘ballast system’ or deal with ‘stability and trim’ issues. I can go on, but you should get the idea here. The bottom line for me or any vessel Captain is this; We need officers that can do the job COMPETENTLY, without a lot of ‘hand holding’ so we can get a good nights sleep.

These four young mates I mentioned above have made a SIGNIFICANT investment of both time and effort to get to where they are now. They have all been at it since they graduated from their respective schools. If you aren’t willing to make that same investment, if you aren’t ‘all in’, you won’t do well at sea.

As I’ve said before, please DON’T EQUATE A LICENSE WITH ABILITY.

I have three pilotage endorsements on my ticket. That doesn’t mean I’m a harbor pilot.
In a pinch I can pilot my ship legally over the grounds as described on my license, however I’m not nearly as qualified as someone that does that job, day in and day out, in all conditions, on all types of vessels.

Importance of Word Choice - Tone of Voice

Word Choices are most critical when you are writing. Our founding fathers knew how important they were when drafting the documents that formed our system of government. Now we enjoy free speech, but NOT at the expense of others. As an Professional Educator for 40 years, having taught all levels Elementary through Master's Degree programs, I am most conscious of choosing my written words -- Saying what I mean. Meaning what I say. You definety understand my 'tone' by the way I choose my words.

KP2001 - I did quote your words. Did you take time to explain any of them? Instead you made 'in house' comments. I got an entirely "DIFFERENT drift". Obviously deepdraft enjoyed them.

deepdraft - Yet, no apology to me....just calling me unprofessional??? (see comment above about my experience level). ****** Please read carefully ******The rest of your comments just now were informative, knowledgeable, and very instructive for my daughter and I. By choosing a different 'voice' and different words your experiences can be the teaching tool that all Midshipman and younger Mariners thrive on. At the point of your retirement, others that have been under your command will speak of you as a fellow Mariner and Mentor. "He taught me everything I know and a fine job at that he did. I wouldn't be where I am today...." (There is no greater satisfaction for me than having been a Mentor/Supervising teacher for the past 27 years....for those that follow.)

This is what my DD and I are looking for in this forum as stated to Jasperdog: information, knowledge and experience......

I wanted to explain that the Sea Far - ing is an 'in house family' comment. A play on Fair Winds and Following Seas...

Again, nowhere have you quoted any of my words as being unprofessional or unkind. You have however directed comments at Luigi and DD. Please go back through all of my posts and pick out quotes that you find unprofessional and unkind. I just reread all of my stuff and the only thing I could find that comes close to it is the mention of going SWO.

I'm never too big to publicly apologize to anyone when in the wrong.
