I do martial arts but I read that every cadet has to play a sport at the Academy. If I were to get in, what type of sports should I play? Or at least what are the intramurals that are relatively easy to get into?

Once you get to the academic year, I believe many of the martial arts related ECAs (extra curricular activities) carry an intramural exemption which means that you could do that as your sport. You'll have to pick something else during plebe summer for sports period, though. If you'd like something fighting related, boxing is an option. Alternatively, you'll have a wide array of options that you make consider exploring once you get there.

Regrettably cadets don't play sports at the Naval Academy.

Unless things have changed, intramurals are typically open to all-comers. IOW, they're all "easy to get into."

Most mids continue to play sports they played in h.s. but aren't good enough to play (or don't want to commit the time to play) at a varsity/club level at USNA. Others try a new sport for the first time. Intramurals are competitive (with tournaments and the like) but, if you're not a star, trying your best is usually good enough.

I recently noticed the USNA has skydiving club. Is that recognized as an intramural "sport" or is it considered an extra activity?

There is no intramural baseball. The skydiving team is an ECA and does not count as a sport. Intramurals in general are a joke. Most people just don't go because they are a waste of time and they'd prefer to actually go exercise. Disappointing, I know, but that's the truth.

I gotcha. Well I've done wrestling for most of my life, but I want to try something else at the Academy. Anybody have any recommendations? I've done mixed martial arts since I was 12 as well, so there may be and option in that field.

Jiu-jitsu is a pretty good time, if you don't mind the practices that are at dinner time.

You learn something new on this forum. I didn't realize intramural sports at Navy was optional. When I was at West Point, mandatory participation in intramural sports, one per semester unless excused for Varsity or Club sports.

Such cynicism. Be the change you want to see in the world, shipmate.

Intramurals are "mando." How mando depends on the company, the intramural coach (whichever 1/C or 2/C gets stuck with it), and general academy climate. Some years they're every day, sometimes there are cycles of intramurals only being like twice a week, which is nice because they really are kind of a waste of time.
When I was an intramural coach (ha), I always showed up and tried to get other upperclass to go because it was "expected" that underclass would attend, but with the understanding that some people's naptime just won't be interrupted.

There's a few ECAs that have intramural excusal. Combat Arms Team, YP Squadron, Silent Drill, Infantry Skills, D&B, Pipes and Drums.

They aren't optional... if you don't have an exemption you have to be on an intramural team. Playing every day is sometimes optional if there is an excess of people. Though the intramurals can be boring, they often are a lot of fun. I do intramural racquetball and I like it just because it's nice to do something somewhat competitive every once in a while, rather than just working out on my own.
