What to Bring to CBT?

Opinions on what to bring are like bellybuttons: everyone's got one.

true, i just feel that 100 dollars for a gerber is to much. I've been on Army FTXs and all I ever used and needed was a pocket knife. I just feel that all the extra gadgets on the gerber are not needed.

My son brought his leatherman (he'd had it for years from scouting) and was glad to have it. He does not have a Gerber. The one thing he was glad he packed was Gold Bond.

HaHa - good idea on the Gold Bond!
What about contact lenses? Should he bring them to wear during reorgy week or should we bring them to A-day? I would think that they would want to ditch the ever so attractive BCG's as soon as possible !

My oldest took a set of his disposable contacts with him, which he left with his stored gear. He also took his civilian glasses. It was his experience that during re-orgy week he did not have the time to mess with putting the contacts in -- that extra 2 minutes can really be much more valuable than we imagine. He was greatful to be able to wear his "own" glasses. :thumb: Once things settled down somewhat during the academic year he began to wear his contacts again.

I was just at the academy over the weekend and had the opportunity to stop in the PX and pick up my low quarters and boots. The saleswoman (major props to her for how helpful she was) selected the standard low quarters that everyone will get on R-day, but selected a pair of ACU boots that won't be issued, but still follow regulations. She told me that they are better than the ones cadets will be issued and I will want to have them later on.

Should I bring them on R-day and if so, would I have to wear the boots I'm issued or could I continue to use the ones I already purchased?

Do we have to buy our boots too?... I only saw that our shoes were required of us...

SUGGESTED ITEMS (in additional to your low quarters and athletic shoes):

Electric razor
Wrist watch (sturdy, waterproof, with alarm and glowing dial for reading in the dark)
Alarm clock, battery operated or wind up (see watch – meaningful redundancy)
Small flashlight with extra batteries (mini-mag type w/ red filter for lens)
Small folding multi-purpose tool/knife (Leatherman type)
Small address book (completely filled out, including important dates)
Stamps (put in address book)
One 8x10 frame (plastic, not glass) with various photos in it to rotate, or a collage of photos to fit
Disposable lighter (buy after you fly in -- for burning strings off uniforms, sealing 550 cord, etc)
Chapstick
Small roll of duct tape (sand color if you can find it)
Lengths of 550 (“parachute”) cord
Band aids, blister pads, moleskin, anti-friction gel (also good for use with ruck chafing) and gold bond foot powder (see a theme?)
Lint free rag for shining shoes
Fine grade sand paper for buffing gouges out of shoes
Extra all-white crew socks (you will be issued some)
Toothpaste, shampoo, facewash IF you prefer a particular brand of each
Sports-type wicking underwear (i.e. UnderArmour type)
Extra boot socks (military)
Thin, wicking sock liners for wear under dress socks and/or boot socks
For female candidates: extra sports bras, and a supply of whatever feminine products you prefer (the C-store is limited).

Make certain your athletic shoes are running shoes (not cross trainers, real running shoes), fairly new, but broken in."

Momof2cadets - what color are the boot socks?? thx!

When I got my pair of boots, the lady who helped me with them gave me a pair of standard issue olive drab boot socks. I would hope that this is the same type we will be issued cuz I just picked up another pair of the same type at Ft. Lewis today.

That's correct about the socks -- just standard issue olive drab.

550 cord can be used for all sorts of things -- dummy-cording your equipment when moving through the field in order not to lose it (this happens A LOT); making a shelter out of your poncho; a quick "clothes line" for hainging wet clothes... the lighter can be used to "seal" the ends when you cut a length you need.

My son added an item to the list of "nice to haves" -- a head lamp (with red filter). He said it is awfully nice to have your hands free when putting up a tent in the dark, among other chores...

Again, NOTHING on the list is necessary -- just things cadets going through Beast have found useful in the past. My guys both found thier leatherman very useful in the field. :thumb:

There are so many of the same leathermans/multitools at Beast (and after) that it is not a bad idea to have your name engraved on it.

xbox 360 and all your games.
Lots of food.
A large suitcase for all your cloths. Maybe two if you have a lot of stuff
A couple beers
Your sea cadets uniform
A printer
12 Cigars
