What to see/do during Academy visit

At that time, it was a lot easier for DOT to lift restrictions than DOD.

Although, at the time the Coast Guard was also under DOT.

I think all service academies had to make the transition at the same time, it just was sooner for the Coast Guard Academy than the other three military academies (and USMMA had already made the move).

These are interesting suggestions, because, with regard to a majority of what I've seen here, I haven't visited nearly enough of the New London area. In fact, I didn't know there were nice sections of New London until my senior year.

We did Paul's Pasta a few times, for Parents' Weekend. As a cadet we ordered Tigers (no longer there) and Mr. G's…. which, while not the best option, are pretty regular cadet spots. My favorite place in the area was the Portuguese Fisherman…. great, not entirely healthy, stuff for Sunday mornings. By junior or senior year, a few of us would grab brunch after church.

Unfortunately Portuguese Fisherman closed down during my 1/c summer.

Forever or for awhile? Last time I was in New London I think they were renovating it (not sure if it was the same business though).

I was at the homecoming game and it was still closed and that makes it almost 4 years now. From what I heard, they started doing renovations and ran out of money halfway through it.

My wife, myself and my son (candidate for class of 2020) will be there Tuesday night (10-25-15) and plan on spending the day around campus on Wednesday. We would like to tour the campus and get a feel for the place as he is trying to decide which of the service academies feels right for him. Good thread should help, but do you have more specific things to look at and do "on campus" midweek?

Not as much to "do" on campus, as most buildings aren't really for tours and even if they were, I'm not sure how much fun it would be without a guide. That said, the campus is small and pretty, so it's pretty easy to see the whole thing, especially if you like walking up and down hills. Check out the chapel if you're religious, and museum. I think Leamy Hall is cool if you want to see class crests. Check out the Alumni Center (near the football field) and go look at the athletic facilities on lower field. Certainly swing by the Exchange and buy some academy gear.

I'm not sure cadets appreciate what a nice campus it is until they are away for awhile.

Thanks, just dropped an email to the USCGA to see if anyone would be available to chat with us for a few minutes while we are there.

I he is going for Cadet for a Day (usually that's later in the week?), there will be a session for parents. Otherwise, check in with Admissions.

Nope not doing cadet for a day, he was qualified to apply but the spots filled up immediately and the Fridays available were not doable from us, it is a full day of travel from Washington state to even get there....so we are going to be there all day on Wednesday...

  • Just to follow up, our visit made such an impression that my son has redoubled his efforts to make sure his grades and scores are in line. He has stayed in touch with the coach (he's a recruited athlete) and that is keeping him focused (which can be hard for him). Even if he doesn't end up at the Acedemy, this extra push will help open other doors for him. But, he is really hoping USCGA happens for him. We actually met a Floridian cadet while we were there. She is from Jacksonville and her father (grandfather?) was the pilot for El Faro. It was nice meeting someone else from Florida. All the other recruits were from the northeast so he felt a bit out of place.
