My son received his Appointment on Friday, Nov. 20th for the class of 2014. He was over the moon! In my usual picture happy way, we marked his online digital acceptance as well as him filling out the card for posterity! After all of the hoopla is over, however, I am sitting here wondering what is next...what do I need to know...

At his final nomination interview yesterday, the Congressman brought in parents and two young men (one from Army and one from Navy) to talk to the kids and their families. One of the mothers suggested that we find these kinds of forums and groups to connect with others that can help us along this path with our son.

I would love to hear from anyone with tips and suggestions for a military mother as well as a mother sending her oldest child off to college, let alone the military!

Thanks,
Annie

Congratulations! Your son's next step will be to finish high school, keep in shape, and try to enjoy life as much as possible (without doing anything that could get him in trouble of course). He might want to spend more time with his friends and family since he will be leaving in a few months.

You will both start receiving a lot of items in the mail including paperwork to fill out and informative DVDs. Soon things will get cleared up as you receive this information with the final things that must be done.

What can you do? Learn more about the Academy he is going to and connect with service academy parents nearby (or here) who can share their experiences with you. You didn't mention what service academy he was appointed to.

USMA Parent Resource

One of your best resources is Deb Dalton. She joined the staff at USMA this year in the newly created postion of West Point Parent Liaison. She works out of the public affairs office, and has done a terrific job. In additon to being personally accessible to parents, she has created a facebook page, web page, twitter account, flikr site, etc. The current (2013) plebe class is the object of much envy from the upperclassman parents because of the amount of communication (and particularly the pictures) she has shared documenting cadet life. There are other forums, etc, out there, but Deb is the ONLY centralized source of OFFICIAL information specifically for parents. Being able to get accuate information, and not depend on rumor or out of date info is invaluable. If you don't have a facebook account, I really encourage you to sign up for one, even if you only use it for her site. Here is her information:

Deb Dalton, West Point Parent Liaison
deb.dalton@usma.edu

The other thing you should do ASAP is get into contact with your local West Point Parents Club. They will be your immediate support and camraderie for the next leg of your adventure! If you have trouble finding them, Deb can help with that, too!

Good luck and congratulations!
