    I'm a bit new to this forum, and have been searching it for an answer to this question. I have read a lot regarding what a recruited athlete is and ect., but no one seems to have an answer regarding when coaches officially enter you into admissions as a recruited athlete. I am being recruited by one of the coaches, but when ever I talk to my MALO, he keeps telling me that on my file I am not listed as a recruited athlete.

    I talked to the coach and he said he entered me as a recruited athlete. Any ideas of whats going on?

    Also, does any one know how they rate recruited athletes? I've heard of people being rated as one star and blue chips. Can any one explain how they rate them?

    Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance.

    No one ever told my son "you are a recruited athlete." However, he got weekly phone calls and post cards from the coach, and he was flown to USMA for a visit on their nickel. The coach knew when the offer of admission was extended, and later called to see the status of accepting. If these things are going on, I would guess you are being recruited.

    For our daughter I think what sealed the deal of recruited athlete in our mind was that her MALO e-mailed her and said that he could have only very limited contact (meaning non at all) with her so as not to violate NCAA recruiting rules. Other than that, Mom3boys is right on.

    @ mom3. I have been in regular contact with the coach, he has talked to me about flying to WP for a visit, and the MALO said he received a call from WP admissions regarding being a very likely recruited athlete, but it's unofficial on my candidate file. Also did the MALO officer say he can't talk to your child AFTER his portal opened or before?? The MALO thinks it might have something to do with that. Thanks again for any help!!!! It's a complex process and I'm trying to understand it better. :smile:

    NCAA Rules define a "recruited athlete":

    Actions by staff members or athletics representatives that cause a prospective student-athlete to become a recruited prospective student-athlete at that institution are:

    (a) Providing the prospective student-athlete with an official visit;

    (b) Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s parents, relatives or legal guardians;

    (c) Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with the prospective student-athlete, the prospective student-athlete’s relatives or legal guardians on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment; or

    (d) Issuing a National Letter of Intent or the institution’s written offer of athletically related financial aid to the prospective student-athlete. Issuing a written offer of athletically related financial aid to a prospective student-athlete to attend a summer session prior to full-time enrollment does not cause the prospective student-athlete to become recruited.

    ( (d) does not apply to service academies, since they do not participate in the National Letter of Intent program or provide athletically-related financial aid )

    We didn't have contact w/ a local MALO...our process was very fast...my son decided in Sept. his senior year to pursue West Point admission...he might have met w/ a MALO in his October recruiting visit. By Thanksgiving, the appointment was in hand. In hindsight, that was really fast! :eek:

    I believe revenue generating sports operate differently.

    NamD -- the rule/definition I quoted applies to all NCAA-sponsored sports

    MALOs should know who the recruited athletes are; if you think you should be classified as one, push the question with both your MALO and the coach(es) recruiting you

    If you are a official recruited athlete you will be flagged by admissions in the system. The admissions contact for recruited athletes:

    MAJ Matthew Childers
    West Point Recruited Athlete Admissions Officer
    & Congressional Liaison
    Phone (845) 938-5723

    I talked to the coach and he said he told admissions to rate me as a one rated recruited athlete…. So unless the coach is pulling my leg? Which I don't think anyone will stoop that low to regarding a kid and their college choices.

    You would receive a letter from the coach with the dates and itinerary for your stay, the name of the cadet that will be hosting you and the name of the hotel where you will be staying. I think it's the one near the airport.

    The paperwork will have names, numbers and emails in case of any questions. You would get this a about a week or so (can't remember for sure) before your stay.

    Note: if you get admitted/chose to come to WP, during Beast recruits play their sport during mass athletics and still have to go through tryouts. Nothing is guaranteed until the roster is posted.

    Have a good time and most importantly, be yourself!!!

    Good luck!:thumb:
