My Plebe-No-More is on his first cruise. He is on the Nitze in Norfolk. Originally he told us that his leave block would be from June 27 to July 25. Two weeks ago he said they increased the length of his cruise, even though the ship is currently in drydock, and they will only be taking a week-long trip up to Maine and back. The new leave dates were July 8 to July 25 (actually 23rd because he has to be back two days early to prepare for YPs).

Today, he texted to say the cruise might be extended another week, shortening his leave to just one week. This kind of makes it tough to make summer plans. Anyone have any idea how acurate this info is? Will they really only give him one week of summer break? My enlisted son gets more time off than that!

Usually, the Dant has to give approval for a Mid to have less than two weeks of summer leave. However, that only applies to planned leave of less than two weeks. Once Mids are assigned to a specific ship, they have to adhere to that ship's schedule. If the ship's deployment schedule changes, or its availability changes, the Mids (and us families) just have to adjust.

It can even happen that a Mid will only have leave at intercessionals (not a summer block), particularly if a Mid has summer school or some "extra" training block, such as an internship.

What 2012mom said. Some times, the cruise details change once the ship is underway, and they don't cut it short or take a detour to drop off any mids aboard for training. It's possible DS will only have a week of leave this summer. Hang in there, though. Even this might change last-minute. (This is the potential bummer of drawing Block 1 or Block 2 in the Fleet.)

Welcome to the Navy

Not unusual for the end of a cruise to be a "moving target". I once deployed to the Med for a 6-month cuise that turned into a 9. Expect more of the same throughout his career.

Sometimes it works the other way.

My 3/C's sailing cruise was cancelled at the last minute. No alternative assignment. So she gets 3 additional weeks of leave. :thumb:

I'm guessing she'll get some extra duty to make up for it come Reform.

last night, DS sent a quick email from the ship. Said it was a great experience... that's all i got! Then I noticed on Facebook that a Gumbo Party was set up for his return. I guess I'm making Gumbo in a few weeks!!!!!!

update

Got a call from DS on Friday. He said there are three possiblities being discussed right now...none of those include the date he was given when he was assigned his ship. One does include his original scheduled leave, another is 5 days earlier and the last is the extended cruise which gives him one week. Guess we'll be making last-minute plans!

I know how to be flexible...have an enlisted son floating somewhere out on the Pacific right now...His Navy career path has changed so many times in the past two years that I am no longer surprised when he calls and says, "They want me to move to _______!"

BTW, my Mid was upbeat. Seemed excited to tell me he was calling me from the flight deck, looking forward to doing some stuff around VABeach/Williamsburg and glad that two really good friends are with him on this cruise. :thumb:

And, I just noticed that I omitted the word "will" from the title of this thread...oops!

Got a text from the kid today. They decided to let them come home at the regularly scheduled time! Woot! :thumb:

I envy you MotM! DS is on block 1 summer cruise....to end june 24....the ship had been in a few ports on the east coast. After a weekend in Virginia Beach they had two choices: 1. Let the mids leave early and go home or 2. Let the mids deploy with the ship and hope they stop along the way to let them off. The academy chose #2 with no guarantees of when or where they'll get off the ship. :frown: I guess I'll wait to make my gumbo for his return!!!

I am so sorry to hear that, Singaporemom! :frown: I sure hope they find a place to let them off the ship, and he gets home soon!!

DS will be home Friday night! Looks like his Monday night gumbo party is still a go, and he'll head to China for vacation on July 1st.
