When you receive your AROTC letter, post results here

I understand that DS will need tuition and room/board paid for during his first year since he received a 3-year scholarship. However, will he receive the monthly stipend and book stipend for year 1 or just for the years on scholarship? Thanks for your information!

Your son will not receive the stipend or book money until his scholarship liks in and he contracts. If his scholarship get upgraded to a 3.5 his first year then he will get both the stipend and book money for his second semester as well as the scholarship.

For cadets that have received a 3 yr scholarship, please realize if you already have taken the DoDMERB exam because you applied for an SA, that the exam is valid for only 2 yrs.

If ROTC becomes your plan A, and you had the exam in Aug., but school does not start until Sept., the exam will not be valid when it comes to contracting since it will be more than 2 yrs old. You will need a new exam to contract for the 3 yr in that case.

May I ask why Fordham over DE? DS looking at same options but hasn't visited yet...

He hasn't decided yet one over the other. According to the Fall 2012 Cost Comparsion list we have, Fordham University covers tuition, fees, room and board and University of Delaware covers tuition and fees. He will be following up with both schools to see if anything has changed. He also hasn't received his acceptance package from either school yet as he submitted regular decision. DS was extremely busy with his West Point application on top of his AROTC application. Currently awaiting for February 26 to come as this is when West Point will begin sending out their offers of admission also know as the BFE. He is 3QD with a Congressional Nomination. His AROTC portal only showed his 3rd choice. His letter stated a 3 yr scholarship to his 1st Choice, Fordham University and 3rd Choice University of Delaware. No doubt the out-of-pocket expenses at either school will play a major role in his decision making. All military personel at the ROTC schools he met with went above and beyond to explain their programs and battalion. They were extemely professional and outstanding. Tough decisions he has to make. But, this is his choice and his career path. We are just the proud parents of a young man who wants to serve his country.

That is useful information regarding his medical qualification. My son completed the exams the first week of December. I hope that this means that he will be all set and won't have to go through the process again before contracting.

My son's letter came today.

3 year offer to 1st school
4 year offer to 6th school

All six schools he listed were large public universities (20k + students)

Received 4 year to my #1, Norwich Univeristy. Was the only school I received an offer to and was posted on the status.

DS received 3 yr to both his 1st choice - Virginia Tech and 3rd choice - UGA.

Portal said only UGA

The alphabet theory on the single school posted on the status website seems to not come true for some so maybe it is about the timing in oder of the offer.....

Say UGA had 5 OOS scholarships available and my DS was the 4th winner and for VT they had say?....8 OOS scholarships and he was the 6th winner...

That's all the "Sherlock" theories I can think of...

We are sooooo excited for him.

(All of his college choices on his application were OOS - public)

It's exciting to see so many applicants getting the scholarships they have worked so hard for.

Cheers.

Wiener,

The scholarship is nice, but what he needs to think about is the commitment owed when they commission.

4 yrs AD in the Navy when they didn't get their 1st career field choice is not the same as going to a college for 4 yrs as their back up plan.

College is 30 weeks a yr for 4 yrs and they chose where they will go, their major. AD life is 52 weeks, 7 days a week for 4 yrs, and the military decides where you will go, their career field.

Is the 4 yr scholarship compared to 3 yr worth it?

Just food for thought

Actually it's 5 years AD but of course your larger point is correct and the longer term for AD makes it even more so.

Received 3 year AD to Boston University, University of Delaware, and Syracuse. Not sure which one to choose and not sure how I'm going to pay for my freshman year. Any advice on which school is best?

Dan, in general there is no such thing as a best school, only a best school for you. That being said, a diploma with Syracuse on it is more impressive in the real world IMHO. But if you're paying for freshman year I think finances will come into play for which school is best for you.

Unofficial Numbers

Congratulations to everyone getting their letters today. We haven't been home yet and we're on the west coast, so we'll see if DSS has anything today or not.

Interesting to see so far that of the 13 people who have received letters and posted on this thread, 6 have received 3 yr offers, 6 have received 4 yr offers, and 1 received both 3 and 4 yr offers. Also interesting that nobody has yet been offered multiple schools on the 4 yr awards, but 4 people have received 2 or 3 offers on the 3 yr awards.

DS received a 4yr to his 4th choice. The only one listed on the portal. He is honored and excited! We are very proud of him!:shake:

How do we find out if room and board is provided by the school?

Received 3 yr to 7th choice school only. It is an out of state small private school. Did not receive offer to any in state schools. Disappointed since I received nice merit awards to two of the other schools on the list.

NC,

Contact the det or the bursar at the school, they will know. There is also a sticky at the top of the ROTC forum thread that discusses room and board.

I believe starting at post 15 there is an alphabetical order of colleges that offer either free or reduce rates,

You can find information on additional incentives organized by state on the GoArmy/ROTC site. Here's a link to Mississippi schools

http://www.goarmy.com/rotc/find-schools.MS-.results.html

Here's a link to another list put together in a collaborative effort by SAF members, led, as I recall by the estimable Gojack

As always, verify
