Quick question....when do mids have to be back in January? Trying to plan....mid in finals and has zero cell phone service in his room this year......I see when classes begin, just figured reform of the brigade was maybe the Friday evenng before!

Return to the Yard

For most Mids leave will end Jan. 6th at 2000. That's the latest we've heard from DS. Some may have to be back before that for ac boards, etc. Check with your Mid to be sure at the earliest opportunity. They are definitely hard to reach this week with exams going on.

Thanks. THat's what I thought, but needed to make sure!

JennyP, if I may deviate slightly:
Who is your mid's cell phone provider?
If you text, are you saying his text function doesn't even work in his room?
Does it not work from other places on the Yard outside his room?
Does he not check his email every day?

Just wondering what I can expect next year.

My mid is a 2/C. His phone (at&t) worked beautifully the first two years. This year, he does not receive calls or texts in his room. Unlike "other" schools, he cannot walk & talk, so on his way to class we cannot call him. He has to go outside to talk to us, which is the case for some of the rooms in Bancroft. The texts come in when he is away from his room.

I don't think provider makes a difference in this situation......just the location of the room. He can talk from a buddy's room just fine.

I typically text and email him. Mids get a bunch of email daily, so he is always checking that.

Also Dolphins2012: You won't have much free time to chat with the folks! Just a fact......many of us parents report infrequent calls. I used to call late in the evening when I knew he'd be in his room. Maybe next year!

My plebe has the same problem (at&t also, but it works well in other places besides his room), so he had us install OOVOO on our computer (USNA approved) so we can video chat. It is better than the traditional phone call! The text chat function also works well for us. Jennyp is correct.....not too much time for talking or texting.

I thought USNA had line land in Midshipman's rooms?

JennyP, our DS's are in same company and my son's phone works just fine (we have V-r-zon). I understand their company is split between two floors. I wonder if our DS's are on different floors then. We usually communicate via text messaging anyways.

lol ... mumsy, you're not on that silly parents blog.:rolleyes: You get treated like a biggy girl here.:thumb::shake: Even allowed to spell!
