Where Are They Now?

DS graduated from a SMC in 2015 and branched AD with FA. He reported to Sill and has completed BOLC. He was slotted to report to Benning and looks like would have been with Hawks and JCC's DS's. He was bumped at the last minute and is awaiting a report date. He is not a real keen communicator with DD, so I have no idea where that stands :)

Weather-wise, he may have just drawn the long straw. Best of luck to him!

Is he still going to the 75th FAB? Or did he get it changed?

Still won't get San Diego or Pendelton. Assignment (so far) is Captain at OCS They are really bummed. Hey, two or three weeks a year might make for a great marriage.

Wow, that is rough! It would be different if they were both trying to get to one small duty station, but San Diego is huge! Hope her detailer can work some magic!

I have a couple buddies who are Marine/Navy marriages. Sounds like your DD's situation, but they all have kids now. Tough.

Both are Marine Captains so big San Diego Navy Base is out. He is Mirimar as a pilot and she hoped to get at least Pendelton (there were slots at Pendelyon but none at Mirimar) so they could try to be like an "easy" drive from home for each. For some reason they want her at OCS (maybe because she was Company commander at Paris Island ). She still can't get out of her assignment to Quantico. She has no Detailer just her next direct assignment. I pity the OCS class she has.

Wow! I always thought that the military tried to get spouses on the same coast if at all possible.

Of course, I can also remember hearing: "If the Marine Corps wanted you to have a wife, they would have issued you one!"

They usually try to. That just sucks that her monitor (sorry used Navy lingo there... hung out with my Detailer buddy the other day so that was stuck in my head) they aren't really trying to work with her. I am surprised that after a tour at PI and school they aren't sending her back to the fleet. Guessing they have a staff shortage for qualified female company grades and she got tapped. Hope it's only a year and she can get back West!

I constantly have to explain what my S is doing in Saratoga Springs, NY - actually Ballston Spa.

I think she is stuck till around the first of September. I think that would be two ten week classes at OCS at Quantico? Hope they give the sacrifice some consideration after this one. It may be that they need female Company Grade with boot camp experience, who knows? Just their luck if he will be deployed again by then. She doesn't want to go back West she just wants to get there for the first time. Again, I pity her training Company, not seriously. At least she will get to San Diego area for great Fall and Winter.

The summer OCS sessions are usually 6 weeks to accommodate folks who haven't yet graduated from college. The sessions that are held during the academic year are usually 10 (or 12?) weeks.

I keep telling her mother that she will love visiting San Diego. Hope it works out. I told her that I would pay for her room at the Del Coronado and the kids could pay the bridge toll, then again Mom will be back teaching by then with only some Fall breaks. I loved the Del during conferences. Yeah, I saw that Summer Sessions are both 10 weeks, can't see 10 weeks during college academic year. I think by the start of Summer they would have already graduated?

It is interesting to me that I skyped with my one son, who is currently on another continent with excessive SAND, but have trouble connecting to other son who lives about 350 miles from me. Mothers are like that: they like to skype with ALL their children. :)

So much different than in the olden days, even before cell phones. I can remember the letters to/from my eldest bro in the VietNam era - weeks old news, cracked photographs, sending cookies which arrived a month later with bugs in them.

Now, instantaneous communication (when you can get them), and they buy stuff on Amazon easier than I can send it to them.

Its actually very common to pull Lts and Capts from all over Quanitco, especially those finishing up schools, into OCS for the summer. Its the way they deal with the surge of folks for the summer sessions without bringing in permanent personnel who won't be busy the rest of the year. I have tons of friends who have been pulled to do that. For females, in the past, they usually would look for Marines in good standing, look good in uniform and have great PFT scores. For males, obviously there are more around to pull from, but works somewhat the same, but usually more volunteers than needed, so no "draft."

I remember trying to get through to Mother when it was my turn on MARS. It was a pain for her to say "over" She got it after awhile. Way before SCYPE or Internet

Oh my gosh... I remember using MARS to call my wife from Okinawa! Awkward and archaic by today's standards. Thanks AF6872 for bringing back a memory.

DD just got notification (and we just got the call) that orders were changed to Pendleton. At least they will be within one and a half hours of each other. On to San Diego.

Fantastic news! Best wishes to them both. Loved Camp Pendleton when I was there.
