Where Are They Now?

DD just got notification (and we just got the call) that orders were changed to Pendleton. At least they will be within one and a half hours of each other. On to San Diego.

Yay. Watch out for CHIPs on those I-5 runs. Know that run well.

I was at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, spouse was in San Diego. His orders were changed from NAS Alameda in San Francisco area to San Diego WHILE we drove XC from Norfolk, VA, to CA on PCS. What a flail. We survived. Needs of the Navy.

Pit stops at the In 'N' Out for a Double Double animal style were some consolation.

CAPT, wasn't NAS Alameda closed soon after USS Carl Vinson changed homeport to Bremerton WA? That was almost twenty years ago! I still remember we had a female voice coming through the 1MC (ship's announcement system) for the first time the first morning we were inport Naval Station Bremerton!

Great news! I am sure that is a relief. I have a buddy who is a lawyer who has now posted 7 changes to her orders in less than 2 weeks! Oh the fun of PCS moves.

Yes, indeed!

I'm at Pendleton and fiancé is at Miramar. Living in the middle is very doable, and she can push pretty far south (especially on 2 Captain BAHs).

Will tell both to stop at IN- N- Out. We don't have them on the East Coast. If she pushes farther South she would have to drive farther.

We had a sponsor daughter on a ship in San Diego and her spouse up at Pendleton. They lived on the East side of I-5 in the Del Mar area, plenty of nice condo/apartment complexes with pools and gyms. She commuted very early due to ship duty, so no real traffic issues going in. He stayed there sometimes, but also had a room/bath rented via Craig's List in Oceanside, for duty days or extra long hours, or during fire season and 5 would be a parking lot.

I have been back on East Coast since 1996. At least Trader Joe's got to the East Coast a while ago. Five Guys and other burger boutiques are ok, but there is something about an In'n'Out. Still miss Marie Callender pie, always cut into 5 slices, not 6, with their signature slicer. Haven't yet assessed Shake Shack.

We had a friend that had their household and car on a boat to Panama from England and the AF decided to change his orders and send him to Germany! It was about 3 months before he got his stuff due to the fact that it was a month or so before it arrived in Panama, clear customs, than TMO had to accept it, and put it back on a boat and send it to Germany...repeat with clearing customs and TMO.

Bullet was deployed in Korea for a TDY and they (AF MPC) called to say orders were being dropped orders for 3 weeks after his return, @6 weeks notice. We lived in AK, and owned a home. Ran around and put the house up for sale immediately. He gets the orders and they changed the date from July to Dec. without telling us, which meant I ran around and took the house off the market, and informed our kids school that they would return in the fall.

AHHHH the good old days, where the left hand does not talk to the right hand.

Flow of traffic favors driving north in the mornings. My old place was almost exactly halfway between Pendleton and Miramar and was a 25 minute drive for me and a hour plus drive for him.
We moved a little farther south and while it's a little less convenient for me, it's totally worth it because his commute isn't as bad and we can actually see each other.
Going farther south (Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, and Solana Beach are all good intermediate locations) can be VERY expensive though.

That's just low, gokings. I love a lot of things about living in the great U.S. heartland, but no access to an In-N-Out ain't one of them. When DH (then DBoyfriend) was finishing up his PhD in the South, I grew to love my hashbrowns scattered, capped, and smothered country-style. Can't get that around here, either.

Meeting DS tomorrow in Baltimore for a send off as his car is packed up and getting shipped to Hawaii. He is driving cross country with another officer that is assigned in Washington State . A few weeks of spare time is a nice opportunity to see some of this great country.

Sounds like a great road trip. My son has been in Hawaii for 2+ years and has loved it. Best of luck to your son.

Have a fun sendoff terp. DS is driving to 29 Palms and exploring craft breweries along the way.
Kinnem, your DS probably already knows this, but make sure he stops in Colorado for his "exploration". That craft was pretty much invented here... Could spend a good 2 weeks checking them all out.

I hope you reserved a time. If not you may find yourself there for a few hours.

Now I am craving an In & Out... dang it!

Me too. Had my last one 3 years ago on a SoCal visit. Way overdue.

All my fault. I brought this up. All thread divergences on this can be traced right here.

Do you know the In'n'Out website has an app that helps you plan your trip with their locations? A few years ago, DH and I flew SW into Ontario, arriving late AM and headed for a wedding in Palm Springs. DH said, ok, we'll stop somewhere, and me being prepared, just directed him to Exit Whatever It Was, with confidence. I got a Look. As we came off the exit ramp, his confusion cleared and we rolled in hot to the drive-thru lane. Bliss. Major marital points for me.
