Curious to see what happens with the A-10's. I'm not really sure, nor ready, to believe that the AF will decommission the A-10s - frankly because they've been trying to do so for so long now haha

The A10 has been saved many times, and those pilots that have flown it still love the airframe and consider it the best in the AF's inventory.

That being said, the 35 is being brought on line and will replace the 10 for CAS. The rumors I have heard is that the Army may bring it into their inventory. Truthfully, I doubt it, I just think thoserumors exist because of love for the airframe.

The UPT drops lately have not had any 10s, which again says to me the goal is to boneyard the plane. I think the last drop of a 10 was @6 months ago right @ the same time that the 10s were announced to be on the chopping block.

If you look at the 4 and 111 it took them many years to boneyard both of those planes when the 15E came online. It was also during a time like now with BRAC and personnel cuts {RIF/SERB). I want to say that it was about 5 years for the conversion.

Hornet is the one to talk to since his husband is an A10 driver.

Well my firm was just awarded a large A-10 modernization contract but that's not any indicator. The A10 just had new wings put on and major upgrades to its targeting system - it's actually reasonably up to date despite the age of the airframe.

Absolutely! I have some very fond (and awe-struck!) memories of controlling A-10s doing their job.

Trust me when I say I've talked to some VERY high folks in the AF about this. Are they happy and thrilled that we are doing this (retiring the A-10s)? Absolutely not. But they also realize that in the big scheme things in today's fiscal environment, it is the logical thing to do.

I WILL miss that distinctive sound of the A-10's gun turning an armored vehicle into Swiss cheese, though......
