With such few appointees each year, it seems that there is few "true recruited" athletes to the USCGA. How open is it for all appointees to play a Varsity sport?

Great..My DS has an appointment to the USNA, but the USCGA has an edge in his heart, to include playing soccer and or Lacrosse (he is a goalie). We are now waiting EA from the Coast Guard, before he pushes the button. Either way, it is a win win situation for him. I still don't think it has all set in.

If he hasn't already, he should drop an e-mail to (or otherwise make contact with) both the soccer and lacrosse coaches to make them aware of his interest and his application. First, there may be some small benefit in the application review process. Second, if he is accepted, he will get a chance to attend team picnics before R day and be made aware of coach's time sessions during swab summer. It's always nice to meet some classmates before R-day so that there are some familiar faces in an otherwise very trying day.

He sent videos to both coaches last year with letters from his coaches. He met with Soccer coach at AIM. Did not get the opportunity to speak with LAX coach during AIM. He plans to touch basis again with them about his EA app. I know for sure he wants to keep playing soccer. I of course want to bubble wrap him until next summer. AT USNA he is not D1 recruited, he wont get to play. At D3 level with the coast guard he hopes to get the chance to be a member of the team. Trying to figure out if we should send current soccer video.

There are a lot of opportunities to play at CGA, soccer, lacrosse, or anything else. That's the nice, closeness of a D-3 school.

Coming from a small close knit Friends school, that is very much appealing to him

I came from a relatively small high school in Nashville, TN. My class had just over 100 students by the time we graduated. I played soccer through most of my "sport playing" life, and picked up ice hockey my junior year of high school (thank you Nashville Predators).

When I got to the Coast Guard Academy, I started with JV soccer (only eligible 4/c and 3/c year). I tried hockey, but had to back off to improve my grades.

Through the next four years I played JV soccer (two years), B-side hockey, indoor track (200m and long jump), lacrosse, and a variety of ICs (intracompany) sports, such as softball, flag football (which was fairly brutal), track etc.

There were numerous opportunities to play the sports I had played in high school or new sports.

My oldest son played soccer at USCGA all four years graduating in 2014. Coach Parsons is an outstanding coach and the soccer program regularly places high in the NEWMAC and ECAC conferences. They got an NCAA berth last year and advanced to the second round. You can't go wrong with Coast Guard Soccer.

I think that the opportunity for football was the deciding factor for my son, along with the smaller and more welcoming feel of the campus. And, now that Swab Summer is over, he is 100% sure he made the right decision.

Tough stuff! Crew had crazy hours (really early) and they seemed very close. That's a great idea.

He's find CGA is great place to spread his wings and try new things.

Tell him to come down. It's always good to have new people at the boat house.
