For those who don't yet know (from previous thread), USNA increased the age bracket in which you can attend STEM (now rising 10th and 11th graders can apply to attend). I plan on applying and attending...who else will do so? (This thread can also serve as a later acceptance thread.)

SAMom - my son is also a freshman (not to be confused with my other sons who are a junior and senior, before I confuse anyone!) and will be applying since he has a major interest in all 4 of those subjects (although not as much interest in USNA or any academy at this point unfortunately).

I'm really curious to see the application form for it and see what they're weighing as most important in the process. For the younger grades it seems like it'll be hard to have those test scores. My son took the ACT last year, but hardly any of his friends have and here we don't do PSAT until junior year. Guess we'll be working on summer seminar and STEM applications at the same time on Feb 1!

Yep, I'll be applying. Way up here in Maine, if it is by "Region" I think I have a pretty good chance.. no mans land.. Haha. I'm interested to see how they pick though, because all people will have 3.6+ GPA's and probably good athletic/leadership so I guess we'll wait and see.

I know it doesn't say anything on the website, or maybe I missed it, but do you think they want/would like a recommendation letter? Thanks!

They didn't ask for anything like that for NASS, so I'm guessing at this level they wouldn't. The whole NASS application was online and they kind of take you at your word for everything, and it's very "fill in the bubble" or "yes/no". Not a lot of room for additional information, or no real way to submit something like that. Shoot - even for the actual application, all the letters of recommendation for Navy (unlike AF) were online. As we've said though, I think for NASS they're primarily looking for PSAT/ACT/SAT scores and class rank - going to be hard to differentiate for STEM if people don't have those scores (and similar ranks/GPA's).

I did think about it and actually my sons probably won't be applying right on the first since we don't even have finals here until next week and they won't have their GPA's and ranks until probably a few weeks later. My junior could use his current one (but he thinks he'll move up some this time), but my freshman doesn't even technically have a rank yet (although it should be #1 so he'll wait for confirmation of that!).

Thanks! Same as your sons, I'm not applying until late February so that I can try to raise my GPA any way I can and figure out current ranks, scores, etc. Do you happen to know how many apply for the high school grade STEM and how many they admit?

No, I just found out on a recent thread that last year was the first time they ever offered this STEM program, and it was for grades 6-9 then. This year they changed it to 8-11 instead, so I don't think anyone would have an accurate number on how many people will apply for the grades 10/11. And probably not for the 8/9 either since it was such a new program and potentially the word will spread more by this year.

If you haven't gone to the Navy site about it yet, you can get a little info there: http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/stem.html I'm sure they know how many they plan to accept for each session, but it doesn't show it there. One interesting line from there is "Selection is based in large part on ensuring geographic representation along with overall accomplishments in and out of the classroom." So it sounds like you'll probably have a better chance if you're not coming from the MD/VA/DC area!

You just made my day, haha. I figured they just said that to make it seem like an "even playing field", but if they actually do follow through with it then awesome!

    PSAT Scores

Finally we just got PSAT scores today...

    64(0)-reading
    63(0)-math
    70(0)-writing

    196(0)-total
    96% percentile

I believe adding a 0 to the end makes your theoretical SAT score. My question is...will these grades be competitive on NASS app or in future SS app? They seem okay, but didn't make National Merit:rolleyes: and wanted at least a 200(0).

My son got in with a 197 last year to NASS, so yeah, it's definitely competitive, especially since you're a sophomore. Last year I know NASS application opened up on Feb 1, so I'm guessing it'll be around the same since it says early Feb for STEM as well. If not, just keep checking each day after that!

(And I just had to point out that your numbers don't add up in your PSAT score. I only noticed because I added the 3 first and figured out it was the exact same score my son had gotten, then saw your 196 listed! )
