As with many others, it's supposed to be time for me to get my wisdom teeth removed. Should I undergo the surgery before R-Day, or wait until some time during West Point's academic year?

Well you could get the Army to pay for it, right?

If you can, I'd say wait 'till WP.

You will save yourself a lot of trouble if you do it beforehand. I did it in the fall of my yearling year at KACH. I recommend doing it now.

I had mine taken out this summer. The procedure itself wasn't bad; recovery was the harder part. I would suggest getting it done before R-Day. I would hate to be going through the recovery while at WP.

I'm getting mine out in the spring before R-Day - I would much rather recuperate at home than at West Point!

I would second what tiki and AKH have said.

The actual surgery is easy, it's recovery from it. Recovery has different effects for different people. For me, I couldn't eat normal food for a week (and was in pain because apparently Vicodin doesn't work for me).

Either way, recovery is always easier at home when it can be done leisurely than at West Point when you have many demands that won't necessarily be waived because of the procedure.

I got mine done beginning of june a few weeks before Rday. That was cutting it close, but I'm glad I got it done at home.

A caution to posters to consider carefully the source of the advice given on this forum (in this case, apparently another high school student), and notice both the economic value, as the poster above noted, and those with experience at SAs did.

My child had insurance cover 80% of procedure - still substantial cost - but was extremely glad to not have to worry about it during plebe year.

It is also important to remember that removal of wisdom teeth IS NOT mandatory. That decision should be made in consultation with your dentist and oral surgeon as to wether there is a possibility that it may become a problem. Some people have room for their wisdom to come in.

My dentist strongly recommended me to get mine removed.

Alright, thanks everybody. I'm scheduling my surgery for spring break!

If one is already medically qualified for SA and then have wisdom teeth out are we supposed to contact Dodmerb and let them know?

Speaking of wisdom teeth, I got mine removed last week, and of course that was the same day my Congressman called to tell me I received a USMA nomination! It was hard to talk and I was really out of it, but he understood and was very nice about it.

Just found out today that I have to get my wisdom teeth out. I'm definitely planning on removing them before R-Day.

It might not be nearly as exciting with some new gaping holes in your mouth. So I’d say getting it before is a smart move :thumb:

Speaking from personal experience (I had mine out two weeks ago) get them out now, when you can recover at home. As others have said, the recovery is the worst part, especially not being able to eat "normal" food.

I was also concerned that this was an elective surgery which had to have prior approval and contacted Mr. Larry Mullins at DODMERB on behalf of my DD (removal had been recommended by her dentist; she had had two removed last year). Mr. Mullins noted it and wrote back "approved." He also wrote that I should inform him should there be any complications.

Right now, the operation is the dentist's recomendattion. He wants some more info, but after that, once it is set in stone that that is the best possible route, I'll be sure to contact Mr. Mullen and see if he can approve it. Thanks!:thumb:
