Wisdom teeth

Just so you know my son had 6 wisdom teeth! Two smaller ones behind the top ones and insurance only covered 4. :unhappy:

I knew the number was between none to up to 4 but never heard of 6

Guiness record:biggrin:

Yep, though I had my 4 WT out before reporting for active duty, because my childhood dentist was retired Army and he said "let's get 'em out now cuz the Navy will get them when most inconvenient," I had another one arrive when I was in my 30's. Felt a weird bony bump coming in, and my neighbor in Navy housing, the head dentist on base, bet me an adult beverage it was another WT. So the Navy finally got a tooth from me...and I lost the bet.

if you have more than 4 WT does that mean you are really wise

Well, the lad headed back to KP Monday evening minus 4 fully impacted wisdom teeth, only slightly swollen and hopefully obeying abmonitions to (1) take antibiotics until they are empty; (2) rinse often with warm salt water (3) get a chit from Patten to avoid PT and IT and whatever other physical activity is on until the end of the week and (4) arrange a follow-up examination at Patton by the end of the week!

I was relieved that things went as well as they did, although I would have liked a few more days at home to keep an eye on recovery (spoken like a mother). He was originally to have had them taken out over Christmas break, but a heavy cold put the kabosh to that. Spring break plans do not comport with wisdom teeth extraction, so we were beginning to run out of options . . . .

I'm glad to finally have the whole thing over with!

Probably not, perhaps less evolved and closer to ancestors who ground down their teeth and perhaps needed more to come in. :shake: Who knows, apparently it's not that uncommon.

ParkerMom,

Glad your son made out so well with having his wisdom teeth removed. We scheduled our son's surgery over Thanksgiving break (his is a senior in HS); while it wasn't his favorite time to not be able to eat, it worked out well and we had the entire Thanksgiving meal (turkey with all the fixings) on Christmas Day, as well!

Great! Glad that worked out for your son:thumb:

fairwinds, I'm sure you're relieved to have the wisdom teeth issue "put to bed", so to speak - I know I am.

DS went to Patten to get the sick chit and schedule the follow-up appointment, and said the person at Patten wanted to actually look in his mouth to determine that he actually had the teeth out because he looked "unusually good" for having had the extractions so recently! While I'm rather taken aback by this incident (did she think he would fake having his wisdom teeth out?), I'm very glad to know he's doing so well.

(did she think he would fake having his wisdom teeth out?), .

You would be surprised what people will do when it comes to medical/dental.

I've been lied to more times than I can count by patients.

"Now when was the last time you were prescribed XYZ Narcotic?"
"Oh doc, it's been months"
-checks computer system that shows all prescriptions filled and notes narcotic prescriptions filled at four different pharmacies over last month
"sorry, not getting it today"
"you sorry doctor, you are the worst doctor ever, I'm writing your boss"

and on and on.

Or my favorite these days: "Doc I'm allergic to the H1N1 flu shot"
