Hey guys and gals! My DS was a nominated candidate for the class of 2015, however didn't get an appointment. He has attended college locally and is maitaining well, we have resubmitted all application data necessary and are waiting for of MOC to make selection for nomination; I am worried that he will be passed over again! He has dreamed of attending a service academy from a very young age! Last year he did tons of research and discovered that USMMA seems as though it will be a perfect fit for him..... with that being said.... any words of incouragement and information on a re-application would be great! THANKS

Dont have any brilliant advise. But do have words of encouragement. As a parent we want the best for our kids and end up living the dream right along with them. This time last year i had a hard time concentrating on anything else as i wished and dreamed that my DS would find happiness. He did at Kings Point. I hope your story end happily.

No experience here either. Except, I too lived everyday about this stuff. Guess I still do or I wouldn't be here,,,again. Yes,i am working on getting a life, thank you! but to the question, with the number of kids who showed up and washed out so quickly - one in less than a day I hear- a kid who is willing to go through all of this again must demonstrate the type of tenacity KP really wants. ( omg, was that all one sentence ? Look away English teachers. This would have to burn your eyes like the sun! Lol. )
Plus with a year of school under his belt he will be that much more mature than the straight out of high school prospects they are looking at. I believe I have read it is important to be taking the same level of classes he would be if he were at KP now such as Calc, chem and physics. Keep knockin' on that door!
I have heard and read other posts regarding reapplying. Use the search tool on this thread and all the others on this forum. No mater the school I am shred there would be common ground to get hope and comfort from. Best wishes. It really is a long A$$ ride!

Worried MOM WAITING, I read your post and felt compelled to reply. Our DS went through a similiar experience, but was wanting USNA. His first time applying (and waiting) was during his senior year. WE live in a pretty competitve area and he received nominations to 2 other academies, but not to navy. His second year applying, ( he attended a college/prep university) he took all the same classes as he would have if he were at the Naval Academy, and improved his GPA and CFA. He received the nomination for USNA and was anxiously waiting for the BFE (appointment), but instead received a TWE (a nice little WAIT LIST letter). That was good and bad, as he didn't know how good his chances were to get called off the WAIT LIST and actually get the appointment. Talk about waiting! It was a lot more waiting and waiting, but it was worth it in the end, for he did get called with an offer for an appointment. My advise, to your DS, is do the very best you can this year in college, work on the CFA, talk to your academy people to find out where you might be considered weak ( and then work on that area(s), and get ready for more waiting. Great schools ( and careers) are definitely worth the wait! Be your DS's support while he goes through this wait again. Last word, don't forget to figure out your PLAN B. It seems our gov't is making cuts to many areas including defense, which makes it even more competitive to get into any of our nation's service academies.

Mom Waiting- Be patient and have your son continue to communicate with all involved in the process both on the nominating side and at admissions. If you don't already know, find out who your admissions officer is and have your son contact them to reiterate his interest and update them on his progress at his current college. Many students enter KP after a year or even 2 years of college and are usually successful in that they have the academic experience (although academics at KP are far more demanding than most schools) and a level of maturity that will help them deal with the rigors and pressures associated with Academy life. Good luck to you both and try to be patient.

Having a solid college level academic record will only help. Demonstrating the ability to multi-task by holding a part time job at the same time will only help even more. Don't let the man get you down. There are alumni out there who did not get in on the first try, some even on the second.

I think applying a second time shows commitment and tenacity. If he has college-level math and science, with decent grades, hopefully he is in a better position than last year. I wish him the best.

That said, as others have noted, it is possible that he COULD be denied an appointment again. At some point, a Plan B needs to be considered. I see posts on here of people (not the OP) who say "I will apply and apply" until I am accepted. In my personal opinion, I think two tries is about the max before it's time to move on with life (that's just my view, and others may disagree). My only advice is that, given the experience of a denial last year, your son have a solid plan B in place this year in case of second TWE.

Why does he want USMMA? Does he want to be an officer on a commercial ship? If so, in addition to applying again, might I suggest he consider the State Maritime Schools. Depending on where you live, you may qualify of in-state or in-region tuition even if you don't live in the exaxt state. For instance, a Maryland student gets in-state tuition at SUNY-Maritime.

If he wants the military college experience with a commission in the Armed Forces, maybe one of the SMCs should be considered (VMI, Citadel, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Norwich, etc.).

This is NOT to say that he won't be appointed. I truly hope he will. It's just, especially with applications the second time around, I like to stress the importance of a viable back-up to get you to your goal. It isn't giving up on a dream, it's re-focusing the dream.

Sounds to me like your son is doing everything he can to get admitted to USMMA on try number two. I hope he gets a BFE and starts at KP in the summer.

I totally feel your pain! My son was packed and ready to leave for the academy in July and the week before reporting for INDOC he was burned in a bon fire accident. Completely rocked our world that he couldn't attend what he worked so hard for. He had received a NROTC scholarship but turned it down for USMMA, so he enrolled in a community college and is taking the classes he would be taking there (and has a 3.4 gpa), is working part time, and is training for the cross country team. Now just doing the waiting game again, praying for another appointment!

INmom92, omgosh! Bubble wrap can't protect against fire. your poor son and family, what a heartbreak. I can no way feel your or his pain but I thank you for sharing your experience. I think I may be so bitter and saddened I wouldnt want to deal with the happy go lucky knucklehead parents here  does your handle mean your are fellow Hoosiers?

Lynpar - yep we are in Fishers. I think we were more sad as opposed to bitter (well, maybe I was a little:wink:). Just thank God that he didn't suffer more scars and that he IS able to apply again. Just gonna wait and hope he can go next year. If he does get in again, I will have my eyes on him at all times!!!!

I could not agree more strongly with this statement. I wish your DS the best of luck and would welcome the opportunity to welcome into the ranks of fellow alumni in June 2016:thumb:

Oh, you are a Hoosier? I spend the secret (non maritime) part of my life in Indiana. I even have my own business centered around a fairly popular Hoosier pastime.

INMom92... I remember hearing about the 2015 DS that was burned, but I didn't realize it was the FISHERS boy!!!! I'm so sorry to learn it was someone so close! (DS is the Geist boy!... and we wondered whatever happened to the Fishers kid! Sorry this is "you guys" but I'm hopeful that your DS will be joining the class of 2016!) The IN 2015 moms are a small but good group.... Best of luck to you and your son! Hope he is recovering and will be able to attend, and ready for INDOC in July.

oh, and fyi.... there was a 2015 DS that attended Purdue University last year, but applied to (and got in) the USMMA... was in the class of 2015. It is "do-able" and it "does happen." Best of luck to ya'll!!!

UPDATE!!!
DS received his nomination from Senator yesterday! One step closer! Fingers Crossed! I pray that God will lead him the right direction!

Spring Open House

Mom1993
Hey... just thought of something. There will be a SPRING OPEN HOUSE FOR NEW APPOINTEES- last year I believe it was in April. We flew out for this last year- and found it to be a great weekend- we learned so much (which made us feel prepared for when INDOC came around in July)! I think this trip also confirmed my DS's decision to attend the Academy- just walking around the campus and participating in the festivities... it was awesome! If you have any ?'s, pm me. But I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend going to this!
congrats again.
