I'm attending the second session of the NASS, and I was reading the checklist of what you need to bring.

4 pairs of athletic shorts, 10-12 pairs of socks, 10-12 pairs of undergarments, 2-3 towels, twin linens, pillow/pillowcase, 2 pairs running shoes, one piece swimsuit, small fan, travel alarm clock, photo id

as far as civilian clothing goes, I think I'm going to stick to khakis and such.
the letter advised NOT to bring excessive valuables. I was wondering about things like cameras, cell phones, and things like that - luxuries. I know they're not neccessary, but I didn't want to bring things that would be frowned upon.

I took a camera but hardly used it, we did do some things that our squad leaders said we could take them out, but that was basically it. We all had our cell phones. Also, we hardly wore our own clothes, I think the only time I wore my khakis and collared top was when I showed up and left. We basically wore the colored tops that they gave us and the shorts that they gave us everywhere. But I would still bring everything they ask for just in case. And have fun! Ask tons of Questions :)

is it really serious, laid-back, or like a happy medium?

I'm ready for anything... but I'm just really curious

Both- some more at sometimes and some less at sometimes. But most really want to answer any questions you have, etc. so don't be affraid to ask. But when they have their little Indoc Intro, don't ask anything :)... just answer.

oh man, I would be the one to ask questions during that. I would bring great shame to my family ahaa.

dont see any problems with bringing my Bible but i guess it wont hurt to check?

I know my son took what they told him for clothing, and he didn't wear anything he brought. They provided shorts, shirts and sweats.

a bible.. good idea!

I know I'm going to bring things like my iPod and some books, but that's mostly for the flight. I'm just curious what others are bringing/have brought

me too because its not gonna be a long flight but itll be a little while, im debating bringing my zune i mean i can live with just my Bible but just wondering.

when i was at nass the only thing i really had time to do in my room was change, clean, and sleep. I'm wondering if plebe summer is gonna be the same...

My son attended NASS last May. He said to bring baby powder or Gold Bond powder, sunscreen, more socks than what they recommend, extra towels (it's humid and they don't dry well), and possibly something you can hang the towels on. He said that he had to hang his towels on the back of a chair and it meant he had to put stuff on his bed - not quite sure what that means. Amazon has a telescoping dryer rack for $42 that looks like it would work.

He also said he didn't wear any of the athletic shorts or shirts he brought, and maybe wore one or two pairs of khaki shorts. Bring a good pair of broken-in running shoes - you will run a lot. He brought his cell phone and iPod but they stayed in his room.

Oh, and bring some money because you can shop in their store. He came home fully decked out in Navy gear :)

Have a great time!

Does anyone know if you keep the NASS tshirts that are issued to them for the week?

Plebe Summer Time

Plebe summer is exactly the same except you won't have time to change or clean, unless you give up sleep. But do not worry they do schedule 6 hours of sleep more or less every night.

Take an extra bag for your wet clothes

I've heard you may want to take a couple of bags or big zip lock so you don't have to throw away the clothes you wear for Sea Trials (very physical obstacle course type events). Otherwise you'll end up with very smelly moldy suitcase going home...we moms prefer if you don't!! :shake:

Here are the items my Plebe was able to keep from attending NASS in 2007:
multiple T-shirts, "USNA issue" sweatsuit, book bag, water bottle....I think that's it. Last year the NASSers received the hoody version sweatsuit (2007 was just the non-hoody).

I b(r)ought the requested 5-6 pairs of athletic shorts and didn't wear a single one :p
I guess you would have time at night for an iPod or something. I brought my cell, but the shorts have no pockets so it's no use bringing any accessories around with you.

extra towels (it's humid and they don't dry well), and possibly something you can hang the towels on. He said that he had to hang his towels on the back of a chair and it meant he had to put stuff on his bed - not quite sure what that means. I had two towels; one was drying on the door of the closet and one I used. I personally never had a problem and always had a dry towel (but then again, I live in MD so maybe 'dry' for me isn't the same as it is for others haha).

The extra bag is a very good idea; mock sea trials day is the last day, so no time to dry off clothes. I also second the idea for spending money -- the Mid Store isn't cheap, and the gift shop even less so. Make sure you ask your squad leader (all former plebes) to take you to the Mid Store before the last day, since that's when everyone goes.
Have fun!

Ben

There was also massive rain storms the week before I went :)... I know some people who went a week before me and they had to cut sea trials because they feared cyclones :)... and yes Sea trials ruined my shoes :)...
We also received a pen, a tablet with paper (like what the appointment comes in), 2 PT shorts, and a folder- oh also our ID.

My week lol. We got soaked too many times to count. I would recommend bringing an extra pair of running shoes so when one pair gets soaked (it will), you have another.
