You just can't fix stupid

Then the solution going forward is to purchase higher priced refundable/changeable tix or to buy the cheaper non-refundable type (which typically can be changed for a hefty fee) and take your chances.

Trust me, one does not want to contact your mid's superior officer(s) about this sort of thing.

I was refunded for a ticket that I had to eat because the school changed my travel plans for me. I was literally leaving within the hour to catch a flight to meet my ship when the school called and said don't go. When I got back to school and filed my travel claim, the travel person agreed that the incurring of the cost was at the direction of the school so the cost should be borne by the school.

Not sure if the mids come under the Joint Federal Travel Regulation, but if they do I would suggest downloading a copy and reading up on it. You would be amazed at the things government travellers get reimbursed for.

Well, thanks to those who actually have a grip on reality. To the others I can only hope you find a grip soon. My guess is that many who do not seem to have a grip on the situation have never personally served in any branch of the military and have little to no idea what this is really all about or how it is best handled.

Stuff happens sometimes folks and, sorry, but it may not seem fair to you nor may it be convenient to your personal situation. SO WHAT! It is NEVER as bad as it seems and it WILL pass....get a grip...let it be a teaching moment and move along. You can help your DD/DS by not buying into the "it's not fair" crap and by completely butting out!

I just have to laugh at the folks who think it would be in any one's best interest to "call the Academy" about some Mid's restriction.

Flame away those who think I am a tad "harsh" here...perhaps it is experience talking and a bit of a firmer grasp on reality...have no clue.

Might I remind everyone that you DD/DS will probably miss several holidays at home during their sea days and forthcoming career be it in the Maritime or Military service. I know I did...and look...I survived...imagine that.

Ruined Thanksgiving

I have 6 of my folks deployed with me that I had to extend 14 days because their replacements missed their flight out of Norfolk. They couldnt convert from ZULU time. Now the outbounds have to explain to their families why they wont be home for Thanksgiving.

DS met his ship yesterday, a change in departure location cost us $250 as we tried to coordinate time at home prior to his departure.

Its all part of the life that we and our kids have chosen.

Exactly. Missing holidays is pretty routine when you chose a career in the maritime industry. I was away for both Christmas and Thanksgiving during during my third and second class years at the Academy. During my sailing years after I got out, it was a rare thing for me to be home for the holidays. My first Christmas as a married man was spent onboard in Corpus Christi and I lived in Ft. Lauderdale at the time.

Even with the job I have now, it is not uncommon for me to miss holidays-and may well happen again this year. It is part of the business.

I recall a few years back on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, I was putting my kids on a plane to go to Grandpa's House for the holidays. Off they went to Florida. I stuck around the airport because I had a set of flights that took me to west Africa for a two week assignment. Even a month later, I barely made it out of Venezuela (on another assignment) to get home for Christmas. And that was done pulling a few strings and flying non-commercial. . . .
