I have a professor from Israel this semester, and today I went to his office hours to discuss an assignment. I happened to be in uniform, so he brought up his military service back in Israel (Israelis have a 3 year service requirement when they turn 18). We started talking and I brought up field training and how competitive it has been this year to get a slot. When I mentioned this, he looked at me puzzled and asked "Competition? You compete to go into the military here?"

Just another example that we truly do serve for the world's greatest nation, and the world's greatest military!

BEST

Or look at it this way. Maybe all their soldiers get the training that our soldiers compete for. Just a thought.

Yeah, but try getting selected as a fighter pilot for the IAF. WAY more competitive than USAF.

I agree with the others. Israel has an amazing military. I would definitely place them as one of the world's best. Definitely above countries like France, and Italy.

I would also think because they require everyone to serve it helps their military. Look at sequestration, the opposition constantly states how large the DoD budget, because many Americans have never lived the military life they don't think it is important. There they all have lived that life full time for 3 yrs. They understand the military as a citizen. They support the military in a way our country will never be able to do. Israel has the 16 and is buying the 35. They are constantly buying new hardware.

Nobody flame me for that comment, I am just saying that when it comes to their hardware, and training Israel is at the top. I don't see this as an example of the best military. This a country that has lived in constant war footing for decades.

Now, if you were to illustrate a British prof., and discussed pensions and TA, and ROTC, than I would be with you. The Brits don't give 50% pay after 20 yrs.
