Entering ROTC as a sophomore?

I'm wondering if there is any drawbacks in taking both freshman and sophomore AFROTC classes simultaneously. My CGPA is not that great (3.0) and I changed my major to a non-tech one so I know that I need to get outstanding grades this fall to be even considered for SFT.

So long as you enter in the fall semester of your sophmore year, you shouldn't notice too much of a difference. Things don't heat up until the spring semester of the sophmore year, and one semester is enough time to learn what you're expected to learn in three.

The only problem is as you stated your cgpa for SFT selection, but I would assume that they will look at the cgpa in a unique way since you transferred from a tech to non-tech majors. Depending on your school, not sure if you are at Duke or UMDCP, the 3.0 tech major would not be a deal breaker per se. It is not as if you have a 3.0 as a non-tech major. The 3.0 was from the tech major.

A lot goes into the WCS for SFT/EA selection besides your cgpa. What was your SAT/ACT scores in hs, or if you have taken the AFOQT (highly unlikely since you are joining now) what was that score.

Start working out now because your PFT scores will also be part of the WCS. That means training in the heat, rain, early in the morning, etc. so your body will be accustomed to whatever the weather is like that day. Don't do just fair weather training.

You also want to do this because 1st impressions matter. You don't want POCs, FCCs and PT leaders calling out your name over and over again to pick up the pace because you are the last cadet running.

I am at UMCP. My SAT score was 1210 and my ACT score was 28.

kevster on this forum is an AFROTC UMDCP cadet, he will be a POC next yr. PM him for guidance. FYI, he may be at SFT currently, so if you don't get a response it is probably because he is sweating in the field at Maxwell! right now

UMDCP has a great det. Nationally recognized as the best by AFROTC this past yr. They didn't become the best largest det in the nation for nothing!

As an AFROTC cadet they will assign a POC mentor to you. Bullet and my avatars are of our DS that was only commissioned 3 weeks ago from Det 330. There is no doubt in my mind that his friends he made at the 330th will be lifelong friends, just like his father who commissioned into the AF 25 yrs earlier to the date from the 330th.

Det 330 has great stats not only for SFT/EA, but also for rated slots too. 2012 commissioning class had 100% of cadets that were medically qualified and asked for rated receive rated. 50% of the class went rated. Pretty strong stats when you start to understand the system.

One thing to understand for Det 330 is it is not just Lead Lab and PT., you will also clean up Byrd stadium and do other various things like the Susan G. Kohlman run or whatever they decide from a philanthropic perspective. The beauty is they have 4 AF military fraternities, MHG, Arnie Air, Angel and 1 more, I can't remember the name. They do dining ins and outs every yr. It is a very active det. outside the classroom.

I've contacted kevster some time ago before he went to SFT and talked about my prospects as an AFROTC cadet. He's been helpful on how I can be successful in cadet life.

Congratulations on your son being commissioned! I commend him for getting a commission during one of the roughest times for one to become an Air Force officer. Hopefully, I can do the same.

JeRDLe, it must be silver wings because I have always known about Angel flight since that existed when Bullet was in AFROTC in the lat 80's.

I only noticed the 4th at the Commissioning Dining Out this past spring since the forge was blue and purple. I knew what the other 3 forges were for, but never had seen this one.
