Summer is going by fast, and I've been thinking on what to improve on next year for my applications to West Point 2 years later. I have a 4.0 GPA, so academically, I think I'm set. But I have noticed that I am weak on leadership/community roles, and sports. I do have some plans for leadership/community activities, but sports seems to be the big problem for me. As hard as I try, I can't seem to get good enough for the varsity level. I'm not giving up yet, but I'm wondering if I can still make it to USMA Prep School without a varsity sport (say I have one or two JV sports)? About how many people get accepted to USMAPS, and what kind of people are they (academically weak? or athletically? etc.)?

From what I have seen posted on this forum, USMAPS is more for those who are academically "at risk," recruited athletes, and soldiers who need to readjust to school.

but can people who are fine in all the other categories and a little weak on the varsity sports still get in?

My DS is Class of 2015, no varisty sports in High School. Maybe a few Cadets have every box checked and are the perfect candidate, but the majority have holes in their application. You will need to to get as high a score as you can on the CFA and let your other strengths shine through.

It can be done. My son had no varsity letter but did have SATs all over 700each, Eagle Scout, Boys State, Club Officer, Good CFA scores. Its a Whole Candidate Score.

So why did they send him to USMAPS? Doesn't seem like he fit the profile of needing academic remediation, being a recruited athlete, or being prior service?

Your RC CAN grant you varsity equivalency if you participated in non varisty sport (i.e. black belt in a martial art). |

Regional Commander, the full time admissions officer at West Point responsible for your region (there are several states in a region).
