Default ROTC Drug Testing

I was recently asked a question that I didn't know the answer to. Does Army ROTC drug test? If so, when and how? Does every school do it?

Since they drug test people enlisting, they probably do their officers. I believe when I talked to the ROTC guy at my local university he said that they test within the first week. However I doubt their is a regulation schedule that would mandate it happen on a particular day.

Best bet would ask someone in ROTC at your school.

Yes, they can drug test whenever they want throughout the year. However, they usually don't. I've only been tested once since I've been in ROTC and it was when I was entering as a freshman.

Live as if you will get tested, even if you won't.

Why does it matter, when and how often?

My son is an NROTC -marine option midshipman 3 rd class. His battalion has random drug testing. As a freshman he was never tested, and this year he has been tested once. You could go the entire 4 years and never get tested, or be tested several times. Luck of the draw. As someone already stated, live your life like you WILL be tested, and you won't have any problems

Why ask? IMPO officers/candidate officers shouldn't do drugs and drink to the point of wasting themselves. Set an example for those under you and find other things to replace drugs, if you're currently using them (legal and ethical stuff).

"Why ask?"

That isn't fair. We shouldn't be judging the person asking the question or making assumptions on the motivation for the question.

Good advice from all the posters on this - just don't assume you know why the question was asked.

In my DS's case (NROTC), they are tested once per semester at random times. In the case of another student's battalion (Army), they test also - typically after breaks. So I would assume that random urinalysis is a part of the program.

I would assume the active duty service members of the battalion (staff, instructors, etc) are also subject to testing but don't have first hand knowledge.

I agree. Sometimes, for some people, eating poppy seed bagels on a regular basis can result in false positives. Maybe the poor kid is just trying to figure out if he has to give up his favorite poppy seed bagels for breakfast.

I do not do drugs or drink. I would never do anything to jeopardize my opportunity to serve our country. I was simply asking out of curiosity. Sorry for the confusion.
