Default Track/Cross Country Scholarship

Hi guys!
I was wondering what times I would need to run in the 1600m and 800m to get looked at for a scholarship. As a freshman I tried out for the golf team only to get cut lol; I decided to join distance track 3 weeks late just to do a spring sport. I had never been a distance runner, but always athletic. I got my 800 time down to a 2:08 and never ran a timed 1600m. As a sophomore I joined cross country and got my 5k down to a 17:22. This past season of track as a sophomore I ran a 4:35 mile and a 2:02 800m. I have never trained in the summer but this summer I decided to and put in some serious miles. My 5k time is already down to a 16:35! This winter I am also going to train and am considering quitting basketball for this reason. I am looking to run a 1:57/1:56 this year in track. Would the coaches consider that I have shown steady improvement and am still a fairly new distance runner with a lot of upside? Also I am 6'2 and weigh 150 pounds. Grades are not a problem, ranked 3/606 in my class and also have a couple non athletic leadership positions.

You should contact the coaches through USAFA's website. Even if it might not be the same, I contacted USMA for swimming and they gave me times that you need if you want to be recruited.

Here's the XC coach- http://www.goairforcefalcons.com/spo...on_juli00.html

Here's the Track & Field coach- http://www.goairforcefalcons.com/spo...n_ralph00.html

Here's the recruiting questionnaire- http://www.goairforcefalcons.com/ot/...ionnaires.html

I suggest looking at the RECRUITING QUESTIONNAIRE first, it has contact info and questionnaires to fill out. Just my $0.02

EDIT: What do you mean by scholarship? I assume USAFA, not ROTC because OP is in the USAFA forum. Are you referring to an LOA ?

Hey there. I dug up the times for the last two meets for the Falcon XC team. You can find them here.

The next XC course they run is Rim Rock in Lawrence, KS, which is really cool because I ran a cross country meet there just last year. I actually fractured my foot running that course.

Yeah, no scholarships at USAFA since there is no tuition.
Do you mean to be recruited as an athlete?

I am in the same dilemma as you are. Freshman year I ran 5k at 19:42, mile 5:20 and two mile 11:40. Last year I ran 5k 16:56, 800 2:07, mile 4:43, and two mile 10:24. I was also trying to figure out what times are need for requirement.

My DS is 6'4" and 185 pounds. In HS track he ran an 800m at 1:59 (PR). I forgot his 400m times but they were about the same caliber; good but not incredible. Currently the USAFA is DEEP with mid distance runners. A few are running the 800m @ 1:50.

As runners know, 6-9 seconds in a sprint to the finish line is a massive lead. My DS tried walking on after he got into the USAFA and he didn't get the coaches heads to turn. At 1:57, you might get some dialog going so it is worth reaching out.

Best of luck!

You need to fill out the questionaire. If your times/throws/jumps are good enough and you appear on the the surface that you will be a quailified candidate, the coach will contact you. Also there are" walk-on" opportunities once you are at the academy if you are not a recruited athlete.
