I am a sophomore cadet in AROTC and currently have braces. I am scheduled for jaw correction surgery at the beginning of summer 2013 (around May; my school's summer break is from the first week of May to third week of August) and will have some braces on for a number of months after the surgery. I'm not sure exactly how long the post-surgery braces have to stay on before I get a retainer, but if they end up staying on for the summer and I do get a slot to Air Assault, Airborne, or other summer training, will they be a problem? I know braces are DQing for enlistment, but I didn't know if training schools carried the same DQs. Thanks for any help as usual!

Have you discussed this with your unit? I would go to them ASAP for guidance. Do they even know about this surgery?
If I had to take a guess, and it is just a guess, it would be a DQ because even the SA's require all cadets/mids not to have braces when they go through Beast.

So far as I know, braces are a DQ. I'm currently a MS4 and need braces. I was told under no circumstances should I get them, as the unit would have to do a medical determination on me and submit a medical waiver. A waiver which may or may not be approved.
I would discuss this with your HRA and see what they tell you to do. |
