If you join the usna class of 2017 group, there you will see a notification quoted by a moderator, which states facebook rules, including no LOA status information to be shared there. I suppose a candidate could put the info on their own status on their own page, but within the confines of that 'group,' (which requires that you be 'added' by the host), no LOA talk is allowed. One candidate shared his info and it was removed.

Last year my son initially was declined an invitation to NASS. In the same letter he was offered an invitation to CVW. He accepted and had a great visit to USNA. A few days after he returned he was offered an invitation to NASS. Needless to say he attended and again, had a great time. What I would like to point out here has been stated many times before; attending NASS is not a prerequisite for admittance to USNA. NASS is a marketing tool for USNA to introduce the academy to rising HS seniors in certain parts of the country where naval presence may be low compared to other areas. At a parent meeting I attended while dropping off my son at CVW, the representative from admissions acknowledged what many parents there were feeling, a sense of disappointment that their child was not invited to NASS. He did his best to reassure us all and went on to say that since our kids were invited to CVW, the academy was fairly certain they had our kids hooked (laughter and applause spread around the room). While a denial to NASS may be disappointing it is not a deal killer. Attend CVW if given the opportunity. An attendee will see things there that are not available during NASS. Cheers and good luck.

someone was chastised on the usna class of 2017 group facebook page for even asking about LOAs, let alone stating if someone had one or not.

Default Taken from FB

Because the Facebook group involves interaction between candidates and USNA advisors, be aware that opinions from other candidates are just that – opinions. USNA Advisors, Blue & Gold Officers are designated to speak on behalf of the Naval Academy. To keep postings civil, a few rules that expand on the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment:

• Candidates are prohibited from posting Letter of Assurances (LOA) and received nominations in accordance with USNA Admissions directive within our Facebook Group.

• Candidates are prohibited from posting DODMERB status in accordance with USNA Admissions, DoD, and Opsec directives.

Sounds like a fairly arbitrary rule. If the Facebook site is dedicated to topics regarding admission to USNA for the class of 2017 - how could such a topic be so strictly banned?

It is a real and inescapable part of the admissions process. LOAs exist! Are they necessary? No.

The beauty of Facebook is this: If you are not interested in a topic, don't read it! Don't participate! It's not as if you're wasting ink or filling up people's INBOX with clutter.

How can something that is part of the admission process be off limits on a site totally dedicated to the admissions process?

It sounds to me as if somebody is being preemptively defensive about their candidate not getting an LOA. There are people out there who do not expect to get an LOA and get angry when reading about people who have received an LOA.

Dumb rule.

LOA arrived yesterday! Not a recruited athlete, although we've personally know a recruited athlete who also received one. Happy happy happy here!
WhistlePig, I was reading some of your posts from a few years back and realized that you are in Pittsburgh. Us too!

3Qd! ... just need a nomination. Roots to grow and wings to soar is what we're aiming for! BTW, It's embarrassing to read over my posts and see all my grammar and spelling mistakes!
